Singapore Polytechnic Grading System

All five Singapore polytechnics use a 4.0-point GPA scale. Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of every module you have completed across all semesters. Unlike universities, polytechnics do not award honours classifications. Your GPA is the single most important academic metric for university admissions and scholarship applications.

The grade-to-point mapping is consistent across SP, NP, TP, NYP, and RP: A earns 4.0 points, B+ earns 3.5, B earns 3.0, C+ earns 2.5, C earns 2.0, D+ earns 1.5, D earns 1.0, and F earns 0.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale do Singapore polytechnics use?
All five Singapore polytechnics (SP, NP, TP, NYP, RP) use a 4.0 GPA scale. The highest grade is A (4.0) and the lowest passing grade is D (1.0).
What poly GPA do I need for university admission?
Most competitive university programmes at NUS, NTU, and SMU look for a polytechnic GPA of 3.5 and above. Medicine and Law typically require 3.8-4.0. Each university sets its own intake cut-off annually.
Is the GPA scale the same for all five polytechnics?
Yes. SP, NP, TP, NYP, and RP all use the same 4.0 GPA scale with identical grade-to-point mapping: A=4.0, B+=3.5, B=3.0, C+=2.5, C=2.0, D+=1.5, D=1.0, F=0.
How is polytechnic GPA calculated?
Your polytechnic cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of all completed modules. Multiply each module grade point by its credit units, sum them up, then divide by total credit units.
Can I use this calculator for Diploma with Merit planning?
Yes. Diploma with Merit typically requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. Use this calculator to project whether your expected grades will keep you above that threshold.
What is the difference between poly GPA and university GPA?
Singapore polytechnics use a 4.0 scale while most local universities (NUS, NTU, SIT, SUSS, SUTD) use a 5.0 scale. SMU also uses 4.0. A poly GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 cannot be directly compared with a university GPA of 3.5 out of 5.0.
