About the NUS GPA System
NUS uses a 5.00-point Grade Point Average (GPA), called Cumulative Average Point (CAP) until August 2023. As Singapore's oldest and largest university, NUS offers a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option: students have up to 32 Units of S/U, used mainly on first-year courses (courses from the first two years for students admitted from AY2025/2026), and S/U grades do not count toward the GPA. This flexibility is designed to ease the transition into university-level study.

NUS Grading Note
NUS grades undergraduate courses on a 5.00-point Grade Point Average (GPA). From 1 August 2023 NUS renamed Cumulative Average Point (CAP) to GPA, modules to courses and Modular Credits (MCs) to Units; the calculation did not change.
NUS Accuracy Scope
Use this for letter-graded courses. Grades such as S/U and CS/CU carry no grade point, and Law, Dentistry and Medicine have their own grading. Follow your faculty rules for anything else.
GPA Tips for NUS Students
- Use the S/U option strategically to protect your GPA. It works on Level 1000 courses and on Level 2000 courses without NUS prerequisites, but not on Level 3000 courses and above.
- Track your GPA after each semester and simulate future scenarios before you choose next semester's courses.
- If you are targeting Honours (Highest Distinction), plan your heavier workload semesters early while S/U is still available as a safety net.
Common GPA Mistakes at NUS
The most common mistake is including S/U-declared courses when calculating GPA by hand. Courses graded S or U are not computed towards the GPA. Only letter-graded courses count, and a failed course stays in the GPA even after you retake it.
NUS Grading System
National University of Singapore uses a 5.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 5.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official NUS grade table below. NUS awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with Honours (Highest Distinction) requiring a CGPA of 4.50 or above.
