About La Trobe Grading

La Trobe's example: marks of 83, 69, 75, 95, 74 and 67 on subjects of 15, 15, 30, 15, 15 and 30 credit points give 9075 ÷ 120 = 75.625, "therefore 75.63".

Why Your Average Matters at La Trobe

Honours subjects are graded H1 (80%-100%), H2A (70%-79%), H2B (60%-69%) and H3 (50%-59%). A conceded pass (NC) can be granted for a result of 47% to 49% in your last 60 credit points if the conditions are met, and it counts as a pass. We found no WAM threshold for a degree with distinction in the pages checked.

La Trobe Grading Note

La Trobe uses a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) instead of a GPA; GPAs for admission are calculated by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Coursework grades are A (80%-100%), B (70%-79%), C (60%-69%), D (50%-59%) and N (Fail, 0%-49%). For the same WAM rules side by side with other universities, use the WAM calculator at /wam-calculator/.

La Trobe Accuracy Scope

The WAM counts each subject attempted with a numeric mark. Nothing Submitted (NS) and Withdrawn Late (KN) count as 0; other results without a mark are left out. A WAM cannot be calculated while you have an incomplete grade such as XC or W in the progression period. The pages checked do not say how a conceded pass (NC, 47%-49%) counts in the WAM.

Tips for La Trobe Students

  • Enter each subject's credit points; La Trobe's example uses 15 and 30.
  • Count Nothing Submitted (NS) and Withdrawn Late (KN) as 0.
  • Credit or exemptions from earlier study are not part of your new course's WAM.

Common WAM Mistakes at La Trobe

Frequently Asked Questions

Who calculates a GPA for La Trobe students?
Not La Trobe: it uses a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) instead of a GPA. The GPAs that some courses use to select applicants are calculated by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
How is the La Trobe WAM calculated?
Sum of (numeric mark × credit points) for each subject attempted ÷ total credit points. La Trobe's example: marks of 83, 69, 75, 95, 74 and 67 on 15, 15, 30, 15, 15 and 30 credit points give 9075 ÷ 120 = 75.625, therefore 75.63.
Do fails count in the La Trobe WAM?
