About the UAlberta GPA System
The University of Alberta computes the GPA as total grade points earned divided by the total units of course weight attempted, over a specified period. Faculties use Fall/Winter, term, promotion and graduation GPAs for different decisions.
Why GPA Matters at UAlberta
Common standing levels are First-Class (3.5 or above on a full normal load), Satisfactory (2.0 or above), Marginal (1.7 to 1.9) and Unsatisfactory (1.6 or below); the common graduation GPA is 2.0. A degree "With Distinction" needs a GPA of 3.5 over the last two years of the program. In Science, the Dean's Honor Roll needs a 3.5 GPA on at least 24 units in Fall/Winter.
UAlberta Grading Note
The University of Alberta has used a 4.0 scale since 2003: A+ and A both earn 4.0, D+ is "Poor" (1.3) and D is the minimal pass. The calendar gives no percentage ranges; instructors grade on a mix of absolute achievement and relative performance in the class.
UAlberta Accuracy Scope
Failing grades count in the GPA and IN5 counts as 0.00. W, CR and NC are left out, as are transfer credits and exploration credits. A reexamination or deferred exam mark replaces the original exam mark. GPAs are rounded using standard rounding rules.
GPA Tips for UAlberta Students
- Include failed courses: they stay in your GPA.
- Exploration Credits let you take up to 12 units of open electives as credit/no credit, outside your GPA.
- Use each course's units of course weight as its weight.
