About the UTAR GPA System

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) runs two long trimesters (January and May/June) and a short one in October. Your GPA covers one trimester and your CGPA all of them: quality points (grade point × credit hours) divided by the credit hours attempted.

Why GPA Matters at UTAR

You need a CGPA of 2.0000 to graduate. A trimester GPA below 2.0000 puts you on probation, and two such trimesters in a row with a CGPA below 2.0000 lead to termination, which can be appealed. From the January 2011 intake degrees are classed Honours with Distinction (3.6700 and above), Honours with Merit (3.0000 to 3.6699) and Honours (2.0000 to 2.9999).

UTAR Grading Note

UTAR's scale for the January 2010 intake onwards gives A+ (90-100) and A (80-89) the same 4.0000. There is no D grade: anything below 50 marks is F. UTAR prints grade points to four decimals.

UTAR Accuracy Scope

Courses graded PS, uncompleted courses graded P, exempted courses and MPU courses are left out of the GPA. A supplementary exam result is capped at 50 marks (grade C). UTAR's public pages do not say how a repeated course enters the CGPA or name a minimum passing grade.

GPA Tips for UTAR Students

  • Leave MPU courses, exempted courses and courses graded PS out of the calculation: they do not count in UTAR's GPA.
  • A+ earns no more than A (both 4.0000), so 80 marks already gives the top grade point.
  • A supplementary exam after a failed main exam is capped at grade C, so passing the first time matters.

Common GPA Mistakes at UTAR

Using UTAR's pre-2010 table (A- 3.70, B+ 3.30 and a D grade). From the January 2010 intake A- is 3.67 and B+ is 3.33, and there is no D.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman uses a 4.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official UTAR grade table below. UTAR awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with Honours Degree with Distinction requiring a CGPA of 3.67 or above.

How is UTAR CGPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up and divide by the credit hours attempted. UTAR's own example: five 3-credit-hour courses graded B, A, A, B and A give 54 quality points, and 54 ÷ 15 = 3.6000.
What CGPA is first class at UTAR?
From the January 2011 intake UTAR does not use First Class. It awards an Honours Degree with Distinction for a CGPA of 3.6700 to 4.0000, with Merit for 3.0000 to 3.6699 and an Honours Degree for 2.0000 to 2.9999. Before that intake, First Class started at 3.5000.
What GPA do you need for the UTAR Dean's List?
A trimester GPA of 3.6000 or above on at least 12 credit hours (full-time, long trimester; 6 in a short trimester), with no grade C or below and no barred course. The President's List needs 3.8500.
Does MPU count in UTAR CGPA?
No. UTAR's Faculty of Creative Industries says MPU results do not affect your GPA or CGPA.
