How the PNGK works
- Each subject grade comes from your best totals across the three semesters (or the resit papers) and coursework where there is one.
- You can sit at most 5 subjects including Pengajian Am, which is compulsory for the PNGK and for public university applications.
- PNGK = the average grade point of Pengajian Am and your best three other subjects. It is not weighted by credits.
- No PNGK is shown if Pengajian Am, or for a four-subject candidate any other subject, has code W (fee not paid), X (absent or no coursework), Y (result withheld) or Z (cancelled for misconduct).
- Resits: a full resit candidate registering 1 to 3 subjects gets a certificate without a PNGK; a candidate improving individual papers has the best grade point of the two sittings used.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the STPM PNGK calculated?
Take the grade points of Pengajian Am and your best three other subjects, add them and divide by 4. It is a simple average, not weighted by credits. MPM's example: Pengajian Am B+ (3.33), Physics B (3.00), Chemistry A- (3.67) and Biology A (4.00) give 14.00 ÷ 4 = 3.50.
What if I take five subjects?
Only Pengajian Am and the best three of the other four count. In MPM's example, Pengajian Am C+, Mathematics C, Physics B- and Biology C give 9.00 ÷ 4 = 2.25, and the Chemistry D is left out.
Is there an A+ in STPM?
No. STPM grades run A (4.00), A- (3.67), B+ (3.33), B (3.00), B- (2.67), C+ (2.33), C (2.00), C- (1.67), D+ (1.33), D (1.00) and F (0.00). C and above are full passes, C- to D partial passes and F a fail.
Is Pengajian Am compulsory?
Yes. MPM makes Pengajian Am compulsory for working out the PNGK and for applying to public universities. If Pengajian Am has a W, X, Y or Z code, no PNGK is shown.
How does my PNGK become a UPU merit?
UPU takes your PNGK as issued by MPM: academic mark = PNGK ÷ 4.00 × 90, plus a co-curricular mark of up to 10 supplied by KPM. A PNGK of 3.50 with 9.00 co-curricular marks gives 78.75 + 9.00 = 87.75.
Does MPM publish mark ranges for STPM grades?
Not in its examination rules. The rules give each grade's point value and pass level, but no mark range, so tables of marks per grade found online do not come from MPM's rules.
