About the UTP GPA System
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) calculates the GPA as grade points (grade value × credit hours) divided by the credit hours taken in the semester, and the CGPA the same way over all semesters. Engineering degrees need at least 143 credit hours, Technology 123 and Sciences 128.
Why GPA Matters at UTP
You need a CGPA of 2.00 to graduate. A GPA or CGPA of 1.50 to 1.99 means academic probation, and below 1.00 dismissal. First Class starts at 3.65, Second Class Upper at 3.00, Second Class Lower at 2.50 and Third Class at 2.00. The Dean's List needs a GPA of 3.50 on at least 10 credit hours, with every registered course passed.

UTP Grading Note
UTP's scale is A 4.00, A- 3.75, B+ 3.50, B 3.00, C+ 2.50, C 2.00, D+ 1.50 and D 1.00. There is no A+ and no B-, and the handbook publishes no marks ranges. F and QF (Qualified Fail) are 0.00.
UTP Accuracy Scope
To pass a course you need at least 40% of the final examination and coursework marks. A course graded C or below, taken from the January 2014 semester, can be redeemed once, and only the best grade counts in the CGPA; one line of the handbook says "lower than C" instead. GPA Tips for UTP Students
- First Class starts at 3.65, so a 3.64 CGPA is still Second Class Upper.
- Redeem a C or lower early: each course can be redeemed once, and only the best grade counts.
- Missing a final examination gives an F, so apply for a replacement examination if your absence is approved.
Common GPA Mistakes at UTP
Adding a B- or a 4.33 A+. UTP has neither: the grade below B (3.00) is C+ (2.50).
UTP Grading System
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS uses a 4.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official UTP grade table below. UTP awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with First Class requiring a CGPA of 3.65 or above.
