About the UQ GPA System

The University of Queensland calculates the GPA as the sum of each course grade times its unit value, divided by the total units. If you are enrolled in a course but get no grade, that course counts as 0. The GPA is recalculated after final grades are released each semester, and your transcript shows a semester GPA.

Why GPA Matters at UQ

UQ uses the GPA for academic standing, University Medals, Dean's Commendations, scholarships and program transfers. A Dean's Commendation for Academic Excellence needs a GPA of 6.6 or more in a semester in which you are enrolled full-time (at least 6 units). The class of honours uses an honours GPA on a set of UQ courses named in your program, including 16 units at level 3 or higher; at least 12 units of the whole set must be graded, with the standard cut-offs 6.200 to 7.000 Class I, 5.650 to 6.199 Class IIA, 5.000 to 5.649 Class IIB, 4.000 to 4.999 Class IIIA and below 4.000 Class IIIB.

UQ Grading Note

UQ grades most courses from 1 to 7: 7 High Distinction, 6 Distinction, 5 Credit, 4 Pass, 3 Marginal Fail, 2 Fail and 1 Low Fail. The grade itself is the GPA value, so there is no separate grade-point table. UQ sets no university-wide percentage cut-offs: each course profile states how its final grade is worked out, and cut-offs can be moved for a course.

UQ Accuracy Scope

Fails count at their grade (3, 2 or 1), a non-graded fail (N) counts as 2, and X, G, M and K count as 0; a non-graded pass (P) is left out, and grades from other institutions are not in the UQ GPA. UQ states no rounding rule (its example is printed as 5.0; this calculator shows two decimals). The UQ pages we checked do not say how W, T or supplementary results such as 3S4 enter the general GPA, so they are not in the calculator. Engineering honours uses a separate GPA weighted by year level (WGPA).

GPA Tips for UQ Students

  • Enter each course's unit value as its credits; UQ's own example mixes 2-unit and 1-unit courses.
  • Leave non-graded passes (P) out, but enter a non-graded fail (N) as 2.
  • For the class of honours UQ uses your first attempt: after a supplementary assessment, a 2S4 counts as 2.

Common GPA Mistakes at UQ

Converting percentages to UQ grades with a fixed table. UQ publishes none: the method for the final grade is set in each course profile and cut-offs can be lowered or raised for a course, so use the grade on your record.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my UQ GPA?
Multiply each grade (1 to 7) by the course's unit value, add the results and divide by the total units. UQ's own example: grades 4, 5, 5 and 7 in courses of 2, 2, 1 and 1 units give (4 x 2) + (5 x 2) + (5 x 1) + (7 x 1) = 30, divided by 6 units, a GPA of 5.0.
Does a failed course count in my UQ GPA?
Yes, and not as zero. A 3 (Marginal Fail) counts as 3, a 2 as 2 and a 1 as 1, and a non-graded fail (N) counts as 2. X (no assessable work received), G, M and K, plus a course you are enrolled in but get no grade for, count as 0. A grade of 3 or lower is a fail; with a 3 you may be offered supplementary assessment, and a pass after it (3S4) is the highest grade it can give.
What GPA do you need for first class honours at UQ?
An honours GPA of 6.200 or more. UQ's standard cut-offs are 6.200 to 7.000 Class I, 5.650 to 6.199 Class IIA, 5.000 to 5.649 Class IIB, 4.000 to 4.999 Class IIIA and below 4.000 Class IIIB. The honours GPA covers the courses your program names, including 16 units at level 3 or higher, and uses first attempts unless your program says otherwise. Programs can ask for different cut-offs.
What GPA do you need for a Dean's Commendation at UQ?
6.6 or more in a single semester, including Summer Semester, while enrolled full-time (at least 6 units). Part-time students need 6.6 over the calendar year, with at least 6 units and no full-time semester that year. For other Australian universities, see our Australian university GPA calculators.
What grading system does UQ use?
The University of Queensland uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which UQ grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for UQ: 7 (High Distinction)=7.00, 6 (Distinction)=6.00, 5 (Credit)=5.00, 4 (Pass)=4.00, 3 (Marginal Fail)=3.00, 2 (Fail)=2.00, N (Non-graded fail)=2.00, 1 (Low Fail)=1.00, X, G, M or K=0.00.
Is this UQ calculator valid for every programme?
Fails count at their grade (3, 2 or 1), a non-graded fail (N) counts as 2, and X, G, M and K count as 0; a non-graded pass (P) is left out, and grades from other institutions are not in the UQ GPA. UQ states no rounding rule (its example is printed as 5.0; this calculator shows two decimals). The UQ pages we checked do not say how W, T or supplementary results such as 3S4 enter the general GPA, so they are not in the calculator. Engineering honours uses a separate GPA weighted by year level (WGPA).
What is the maximum GPA for UQ on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this UQ page is 7.
How can I verify UQ grading policy before using this result?
Check the Official References section on this page first. Primary sources used: my.UQ: Final grades (grade descriptors, GPA formula and example); UQ Policy and Procedure Library: Assessment Procedure, Part H - Grading system; UQ Policy and Procedure Library: Bachelor Honours Degree Procedure.
