About the USM GPA System
Universiti Sains Malaysia holds Malaysia's only APEX (Accelerated Programme for Excellence) university status, awarded in 2008. Based in Penang with campuses in Kubang Kerian and Nibong Tebal, USM is particularly strong in pharmaceutical sciences, physics, and sustainability research.
Why GPA Matters at USM
USM does not award degree classes, but a 2012 Registrar letter treats a CGPA of 3.67 to 4.00 as the equivalent of First Class for administrative purposes. To graduate you need a CGPA of 2.00 and at least a C in the compulsory university courses.
USM Grading Note
USM grades on a 4.00 scale from A (4.00) down to D- (0.67) and F (0). A to C are passes, C- to D- are conditional passes and F is a fail; Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmaceutical Sciences need B- or above in every core course. USM does not award degree classes, but for administrative purposes a 2012 Registrar letter treats a CGPA of 3.67 to 4.00 as First Class, 3.00 to 3.66 as Second Upper and 2.00 to 2.99 as Second Lower.
USM Accuracy Scope
You can repeat courses graded C- or below, including as long-vacation courses (KSCP), where the latest grade is used; USM's public pages do not say how the older grade is treated in your CGPA. Audit and exempted (DK) courses are left out. To graduate you need a CGPA of 2.00 and at least a C in the compulsory university courses.
GPA Tips for USM Students
- USM uses a more granular grading scale with D+ and D- distinctions. Understand the exact point values to plan your semester targets.
- Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmaceutical Sciences students must get B- or above in every core course, stricter than the C needed elsewhere.
- USM long-vacation courses (KSCP) let you retake courses graded C- or below, and the latest grade is used in your GPA. Check your school office for what is offered each year.
Common GPA Mistakes at USM
Students from other Malaysian universities sometimes overlook USM's finer D+/D- grade distinctions. At USM, a D+ (1.33) and D- (0.67) are separate grades, not just a generic D, which affects CGPA calculation.
USM Grading System
