About the UPM GPA System
Universiti Putra Malaysia evolved from the College of Agriculture Malaya (1931) and retains world-class strength in agriculture, forestry, and veterinary science. UPM also has growing programmes in engineering and computer science, and is among Malaysia's top three research universities.
Why GPA Matters at UPM
UPM uses a slightly different grade-point mapping (A- = 3.75, B+ = 3.50) compared to most Malaysian universities. Direct PhD consideration at UPM requires a CGPA of 3.750+, while Masters entry typically needs 2.750+, making precise CGPA tracking essential. The Dean's List needs a semester GPA of 3.75 or above with at least 12 credit hours, and a GPA of 4.000 puts you on the Vice Chancellor's List.

UPM Grading Note
UPM grades on a 4.000 scale with A- 3.75, B+ 3.50, B- 2.75 and C+ 2.50, unlike most Malaysian universities. In the general table only F (39 marks or less) is a fail, but core courses graded C-, D+ or D in Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Nursing must be repeated until you get at least a C.
UPM Accuracy Scope
If you fail a course and later pass it, the first failing grade is dropped from your CGPA, but any second or later failing grade still counts. A passed course repeated to improve it (once, with the Dean's permission) replaces the original grade. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine degrees have their own rules and are not classed.
GPA Tips for UPM Students
- UPM grade points differ from the national norm: A- = 3.75 and B+ = 3.50 instead of the common 3.67 and 3.33. Double-check your calculations.
