    Each subject is scored in 8 Achievement Levels based on the mark. AL 1 is the best. The PSLE Score adds up the ALs of English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics and Science.

    How the PSLE Score is calculated

    Add the four ALs. MOE's example: AL 3 in English, AL 2 in Mother Tongue, AL 1 in Mathematics and AL 2 in Science give 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 8. The score runs from 4 to 32, so there are 29 possible PSLE Scores, and a lower score is better.

    Higher Mother Tongue does not count towards the score. Students exempted from Mother Tongue, or taking another language in its place, are given a Mother Tongue AL between 6 and 8 by MOE, based on students with similar results in the other three subjects.

    Marks are turned into ALs subject by subject, so a mark of 89 and a mark of 85 both give AL 2. This is why two students with very different total marks can end up with the same PSLE Score.

    Posting Groups and Secondary 1 subject levels

    From the 2024 Secondary 1 intake, Full Subject-Based Banding replaced the Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams. The PSLE Score now sets a Posting Group, which is used for posting and for the level at which most subjects start.

    A subject can start at a more demanding level if its AL is strong enough. In Posting Group 2, AL 5 or better in English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics or Science allows that subject at G3. In Posting Group 1, AL 5 or better allows G2 or G3, and AL 6 or Foundation AL A allows G2.

    From the 2026 Secondary 1 cohort, Higher Mother Tongue no longer depends on the overall PSLE Score. It needs AL 1 or 2 in Mother Tongue, or a Distinction or Merit in Higher Mother Tongue. For a third language, Foreign Languages need a PSLE Score of 8 or better, and Asian Languages and the Malay or Chinese Special Programmes need 24 or better; citizenship and language conditions also apply.

    How Secondary 1 posting works

    1. Students are ranked by PSLE Score and placed in their chosen schools in order of choice, as places allow. You can list 6 schools.
    2. When students with the same score compete for the last places, the tie-breakers are citizenship (Singapore Citizens, then Permanent Residents, then international students), the order of choices, and then computerised balloting.
    3. Affiliation priority only applies if the affiliated school is the first choice and its extra criteria are met. At least 20% of places in each Posting Group are kept for students without affiliation.
    4. Students who are not placed in any of their choices are posted to a school with vacancies, based on their score and home address.

    Each school's cut-off point is the score of the last student posted to it in each Posting Group. The secondary school cut-off points page lists the 2025 ranges for all 139 schools that published them.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How is the PSLE score calculated?
    Each of the four subjects, English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics and Science, gets an Achievement Level (AL) from 1 to 8 based on the mark. The PSLE Score is the sum of the four ALs, so it runs from 4 (the best) to 32. For example, AL 3 in English, AL 2 in Mother Tongue, AL 1 in Mathematics and AL 2 in Science give a PSLE Score of 8.
    What AL is 85 marks in PSLE?
    85 marks is AL 2, which covers 85 to 89. You need 90 or more for AL 1, and 80 to 84 is AL 3. For a Foundation subject, 75 to 100 is AL A, which counts as AL 6.
    What is a good PSLE score?
    It depends on the schools you want. In the 2025 S1 posting, non-affiliated cut-offs for Integrated Programme places ranged from 6 to 9. For Posting Group 3 places outside the IP, 14 schools had a cut-off of 10 or better, 55 had 15 or better and 95 had 20 or better.     Does Higher Chinese count in the PSLE score?
    No. Higher Mother Tongue is not part of the PSLE Score. A Distinction, Merit or Pass in Higher Chinese together with a PSLE Score of 14 or better gives a posting advantage to SAP schools: among students with the same score, those with better Higher Chinese grades are placed first.
    What are the PSLE posting groups?
    Since the 2024 Secondary 1 intake there are no Express, N(A) or N(T) streams. The PSLE Score instead places students in Posting Group 3 (4 to 20), 2 or 3 (21 to 22), 2 (23 to 24), 1 or 2 (25) or 1 (26 to 30 with AL 7 or better in English and Mathematics). The group sets the level, G3, G2 or G1, at which most subjects start.
    What happens if two students have the same PSLE score?
    Tie-breakers only matter when students with the same score compete for the last places at a school. They are applied in order: citizenship (Singapore Citizens, then Permanent Residents, then international students), the order of school choices, and then computerised balloting.
    Can my child take subjects at a higher level in Secondary 1?
    Yes, subject by subject. In Posting Group 2, an AL 5 or better lets that subject be taken at G3. In Posting Group 1, AL 5 or better allows G2 or G3, and AL 6 or Foundation AL A allows G2. The calculator lists the options for your results.
    How do Foundation subjects count?
    Foundation subjects are graded AL A (75 to 100), AL B (30 to 74) and AL C (below 30). For the PSLE Score these count as AL 6, 7 and 8.
