      How L1R5 is calculated

      Each O-Level grade counts as the number in it: A1 = 1, A2 = 2, B3 = 3 and so on to E8 = 8. A1 to C6 are passes. Grade 9 is not counted here, as MOE gives no points for it. The calculator picks the combination with the lowest total.

      Humanities include Geography, History, the Literatures, the combined Humanities (Social Studies with a Geography, History or Literature elective), Higher Art, Higher Music, Bahasa Indonesia and the Chinese and Malay Special Programmes. Economics, Business Studies, Principles of Accounts and Art are not Humanities: they can only be R4 or R5.

      What cannot be used: Religious Knowledge as a best-scoring subject, a Higher Mother Tongue together with the Mother Tongue of the same language, and Merit or Pass grades in the Mother Tongue 'B' syllabus.

      MOE's sample Form A shows how it works: English A2, Malay B3, Mathematics C6, Science (Chemistry, Biology) B3, Principles of Accounts B3, Humanities (Social Studies, History) B3 and Geography C5 give L1R5 = 2 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 3 + 3 = 19. The same results give L1R4 = 14 and ELR2B2-A = 14, B = 17, C = 17, D = 17. Press "Load MOE example" to check.

      JC and MI eligibility in the 2027 JAE

      • Junior college: gross L1R5 of 20 or better. Millennia Institute: gross L1R4 of 20 or better, where L1R4 is L1, 2 best Humanities, Mathematics or Science subjects, and 2 best other subjects.
      • Subject grades: English A1 to C6, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics A1 to D7, and Mother Tongue A1 to D7 (Higher Mother Tongue A1 to E8, or an approved Mother Tongue in lieu).
      • If one subject grade is missing, you can still be admitted on condition with a gross score of 15 or better, or 16 to 20 with A1 or A2 in every relevant subject. The subject must then be passed by the end of JC Year 1.
      • Eligibility uses the gross score. The net score, after bonus points, ranks applicants for posting.

      JC and MI bonus points are capped at 4 in the 2027 JAE (3 from 2028); the Language Elective Programme adds 2 more on top. Affiliation points only apply to your 1st choice, or to your 1st and 2nd choices, and not for MI. Polytechnics only count CCA points.

      ELR2B2 for polytechnics

      ELR2B2 net = English + 2 relevant subjects (R1, R2) + 2 best other subjects (B1, B2) − CCA bonus points. For the 2027 JAE it must be 26 or better (Diploma in Nursing, ELR2B2-C: 28), and each course also sets its own minimum grades.

      • ELR2B2-A (21 courses, mostly media, humanities and social sciences): R1 from Humanities, the arts, Economics or Business Studies; R2 from a wide list including Mathematics and Mother Tongue.
      • ELR2B2-B (36 courses, mostly business, accountancy and hospitality): R1 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics; R2 from Humanities, the arts, Economics, Business Studies or Principles of Accounts.
      • ELR2B2-C (119 courses, mostly engineering, IT, science and health): R1 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics; R2 a science or a technical subject such as Computing or Design & Technology.
      • ELR2B2-D (19 courses, mostly design, architecture and media production): R1 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics; R2 a science, Art, Design & Technology or a similar subject.

      What changes from 2028

      From 2027, O-Levels become the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), and the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise replaces the JAE. O-Level grades count as G3.

      • JCs use L1R4 (L1, a Humanities subject, a Mathematics or Science subject, one more of either, and one best subject) with a gross limit of 16; MI keeps a limit of 20. All subjects must be G3.
      • Bonus points are capped at 3. Conditional admission needs a gross score of 12 or better for JC (or 13 to 16 with A1 or A2 in all relevant subjects).
      • Polytechnics: net ELR2B2 of 22 or better (Nursing 24). The second best subject (B2) counts on the G2 scale: A1 to B3 = 1, B4 to C6 = 2, D7 = 3, E8 = 4.

      MOE's example: English A1, Mathematics B3, Humanities C6, Science A2 and Tamil B3 give ELR2B2-B = 1 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 1 = 13, or 11 after 2 CCA points. Switch the calculator to "2028 PSE" to use these rules.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      How do I calculate L1R5?
      Add the grade points of 6 subjects: English or Higher Mother Tongue (L1), your best Humanities subject (R1), your best Mathematics or Science subject (R2), your best Humanities, Mathematics or Science subject (R3), and your 2 best remaining subjects (R4 and R5). A1 counts 1 point, A2 2 points and so on up to E8. The lower the total, the better.
      What L1R5 do I need for JC?
      For the 2027 JAE you need a gross L1R5 of 20 or better, plus at least C6 in English, D7 in Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, and D7 in Mother Tongue (or E8 in Higher Mother Tongue). Bonus points then lower your net score, which is used for posting. In the 2026 JAE, JC courses admitted students with net scores from 2 up to 20.
      What is the difference between L1R5 and L1R4?
      L1R5 uses 6 subjects and is for junior colleges. L1R4 uses 5 subjects and is for Millennia Institute, where the limit is also 20. From the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise, JCs switch to L1R4 as well, with a limit of 16.
      Is Economics a Humanities subject for L1R5?
      No. MOE lists Economics, Business Studies, Principles of Accounts and Art as "other" subjects, so they can only fill R4 or R5. Higher Art and Higher Music do count as Humanities.
      Can I use Higher Chinese as L1?
      Yes. L1 can be English or a Higher Mother Tongue. If Higher Chinese is L1, English can be one of your best subjects, but Chinese cannot be used, because a Higher Mother Tongue and the Mother Tongue of the same language never count together.
      What is ELR2B2?
      It is the polytechnic aggregate: English, 2 relevant subjects (R1 and R2) and your 2 best other subjects (B1 and B2), minus CCA bonus points. Each diploma uses one of four types, A to D, which decide the relevant subjects. For the 2027 JAE the net score must be 26 or better (28 for Nursing).
      Do bonus points count for JC eligibility?
      No. JC and MI eligibility is checked on the gross score, before bonus points. The net score, after bonus points, is used to rank applicants in posting. For polytechnics, both eligibility and posting use the net score.
      What changes for O-Level students from 2028?
      From the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise, JCs use L1R4 with a gross limit of 16, MI keeps 20, and bonus points are capped at 3 instead of 4. For polytechnics the net ELR2B2 limit becomes 22 (24 for Nursing), and the second best subject is counted on the G2 scale.
