About UBC Grading

The University of British Columbia (Vancouver and Okanagan) records grades as percentages with letter equivalents. UBC Okanagan Student Services publishes a percentage-to-GPA comparison on a 4.33 scale for students who need one, but says the receiving institution's own scale decides.

Why Your Average Matters at UBC

Standing and awards use percentage averages. In Vancouver Arts, a Winter Session average of 55% or more is good standing; the Dean's List needs 80% to below 85% and Dean's Scholar 85% on at least 27 credits. In Science, the Dean's List is 80% to below 90% and Dean's Scholar 90%. Arts graduates earn "with Distinction" at 80% and "with High Distinction" at 85% on courses numbered 300 and above.

UBC Grading Note

UBC grades in percentages and reports percentage averages; the calendar sets no grade points and defines no GPA. In most faculties 50% (D) is a pass, and the letter bands are A+ 90-100, A 85-89, A- 80-84, B+ 76-79, B 72-75, B- 68-71, C+ 64-67, C 60-63, C- 55-59 and D 50-54.

UBC Accuracy Scope

Averages are weighted by credits. Credit/D/Fail and pass/fail courses are left out. In Arts, repeating a course does not replace the earlier grade. Dentistry, Nursing, Medicine and some other programs fail below 60%. The GPA equivalent here uses UBC Okanagan's comparison table, which itself says the school you apply to may use its own scale.

Tips for UBC Students

  • Weight each course by its credits: a 6-credit course counts twice as much as a 3-credit one.
  • If an application asks for your GPA, check its own conversion first; UBC does not issue one.
  • Credit/D/Fail keeps an elective out of your average, but only 6 credits a session and 12 toward your degree.
