About the uOttawa GPA System

The University of Ottawa multiplies each course's units by its numeric value on the 10-point scale and divides by the units taken. The same rule gives the term GPA (TGPA) and the cumulative GPA (CGPA).

Why GPA Matters at uOttawa

You need a CGPA of 4.0 for good standing and to graduate with a bachelor's degree, and 5.0 for an honours bachelor's; a CGPA below 3.0 after 24 units leads to withdrawal from the faculty. The Dean's Honour List needs a term GPA of 8.5 (7.5 in law). At graduation most faculties award Summa cum laude at 9.00, Magna cum laude at 8.00 and Cum laude at 7.00.

uOttawa Grading Note

uOttawa grades on a 10-point scale under Academic Regulation A-3: A+ is 10 and there is no B-. D is the lowest undergraduate pass, and E (40-49%) is a failure that still carries 1 point. Final course marks are rounded to a whole number, and the CGPA to two decimals.

uOttawa Accuracy Scope

Your CGPA counts every course taken, passed or failed, at uOttawa, Saint Paul University, Dominican University College and Carleton; ABS and EIN count as 0. For a repeated course only the last grade counts, even if it is lower. CR, NC, P, S and NS are left out. Some programs need more to pass: C in Education, C+ in Nursing.

GPA Tips for uOttawa Students

  • Round each final percentage first: 84.5% becomes 85% (A), while 84.4% stays 84% (A-).
  • A retake replaces the earlier grade in your CGPA even if it is lower, and you get at most three attempts.
  • Courses taken at Carleton, Saint Paul or Dominican count in your uOttawa CGPA.
