How CSU calculates your A-G GPA

Take your A-G grades after 9th grade. Cal State Apply uses the 10th and 11th grade levels for the initial admission decision. A summer class between 9th and 10th grade counts as 10th grade.
Turn each semester grade into points: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Pluses and minuses do not count; D and F grades stay in.
Add honors points. One extra point per semester of an Honors, AP, IB or college course with a C- or better, up to 8 in total and no more than 2 from 10th grade.
Divide by the number of grades. California residents and graduates need 2.50; nonresidents need 3.00.

CSU GPA rules

Plus and minus	Not used: a B- counts as a B.
Credit, Pass, No Credit	Not used in the GPA.
D and F grades	Stay in the GPA, although they do not count toward the A-G years.
Honors courses, California high schools	Courses marked Honors, AP or IB on your school's UC A-G list, and college courses that meet an A-G requirement.
Honors courses, out-of-state high schools	The 2027-2028 out-of-state guide gives the extra point to the same courses as for California schools: courses marked UC Honors on the UC A-G list, AP courses and IB courses. The 2026-2027 edition had also allowed courses your school designates Honors; that sentence is gone from the 2027-2028 edition.
Honors points	A = 5, B = 4, C = 3: one extra point per semester. Only C- or better earns it; D and F get none.
Honors limit	8 semesters in total, from 10th to 12th grade, with no more than 2 from 10th grade.
College courses	A 3-4 unit college course (3 semester or 4 quarter units) taken for one semester counts as a full year, so its grade counts twice.
Repeated courses	Counted once, with the highest grade. If the highest grade was earned in 9th grade, it is not in the GPA.
California residents and graduates	2.50 or higher is eligible. 2.00 to 2.49 may be reviewed on supplemental factors.
Nonresidents	3.00 or higher, plus each campus's supplemental factors. CSU's admission requirements page says campuses may review a nonresident GPA between 2.47 and 2.99 on supplemental factors; the 2026-2027 handbook says between 2.50 and 2.99. The two sources differ, so both are given.
Impacted campuses and majors	May use higher A-G GPA thresholds and extra criteria.
Rounding	CSU does not publish a rounding rule. Its examples show two decimals.

The CSU Admission Handbook 2026-2027 calculates a GPA from 19 grades, first without and then with honors points. The calculator gives the same results; press "Load CSU's example" to see it.

The handbook does not say which courses were honors or in which grade. The loaded example puts 2 honors semesters in 10th grade and the rest in 11th; the course names are for illustration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my CSU GPA?

List every A-G semester grade from 10th and 11th grade and give A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and F 0 points. Add 1 point for each semester of an Honors, AP or IB course with a C- or better, up to 8 with no more than 2 from 10th grade, then divide by the number of grades. In CSU's handbook example, 55 grade points over 19 grades is 2.89, and 6 honors points make it 61 / 19 = 3.21.

What GPA do you need for CSU?

2.50 in the A-G GPA for California residents and graduates of California high schools. Between 2.00 and 2.49, campuses may still review you on supplemental factors such as courses beyond the A-G minimum, household income and extracurricular involvement. Nonresidents need 3.00 along with each campus's supplemental factors. CSU's admission requirements page says campuses may review a nonresident GPA between 2.47 and 2.99 on supplemental factors; the 2026-2027 handbook says between 2.50 and 2.99. The two sources differ, so both are given. Impacted campuses and majors can set higher GPA thresholds.

How many honors points can I get for CSU?

Up to 8: one per semester of an approved Honors, AP, IB or college course graded C- or better, taken from 10th to 12th grade. No more than 2 can come from 10th grade.

Does CSU count 9th grade and senior year grades?

Not 9th grade: no 9th-grade grade is used, even if the course meets an A-G requirement. For the initial admission decision, Cal State Apply calculates the GPA from 10th and 11th grade, and CSU's UC-CSU comparison chart counts courses from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade. CSU's handbook defines the high school GPA as based on work completed after grade nine but prior to high school graduation. The calculator shows a figure with 12th grade separately when you enter 12th-grade grades.

How is the CSU GPA different from the UC GPA?

The grade points and the 8-point honors limit are the same, but CSU allows only 2 honors points from 10th grade where UC allows 4, and CSU counts honors from 12th grade. CSU keeps the highest grade of a repeated course. The minimums differ: 2.50 for CSU and 3.0 for UC (California residents).

Do college classes count in the CSU GPA?

Yes, if they meet an A-G requirement. Cal State Apply counts a 3-4 unit college course taken for one semester as a full year, so its grade counts twice. College courses can also earn honors points within the 8-point limit; CSU does not say whether such a course earns one honors point or two.

Do pluses and minuses count in the CSU GPA?

No. CSU treats a plus or minus grade as the whole letter, so a B+ and a B- both count as a B.

What if I repeated a class?

CSU counts a repeated course once, using the attempt with the highest grade, so enter only that grade. If the highest grade was earned in 9th grade, the course is not in the GPA.
