About the RMIT GPA System

RMIT multiplies the credit points of each course (student contact hours in vocational education) by the grade point value of the grade received, then divides the total grade points by the total credit points. Your GPA is shown in Enrolment Online and recorded on your academic transcript.

Why GPA Matters at RMIT

Bachelor (non-honours), associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma and master by coursework awards use your cumulative GPA: 3.0 or more is Pass with Distinction and less than 3.0 is a Pass. Bachelor honours students who commenced from 1 January 2016 are classed by WAM instead: 80 or more Honours First Class (H1), 70-79 H2A, 60-69 H2B and 50-59 Pass.

RMIT Grading Note

RMIT uses a 4-point GPA: HD (80-100) is 4, DI (70-79) 3, CR (60-69) 2 and PA (50-59) 1. Its graded vocational competency codes CHD, CDI, CC and CAG count 4, 3, 2 and 1; non-graded competency results are excluded. A Supplementary Pass (SP) also counts 1, and NN and NH fails count 0. RMIT rounds the GPA to one decimal point, so 2.25 is reported as 2.3; this calculator shows two decimals. Bachelor honours degrees are classed by a Weighted Average Mark, which you can work out on /wam-calculator/.

RMIT Accuracy Scope

Pass only (PX) results, credit transfer (EX, BX, MX, AL), recognition of prior learning, withdrawals (WDR) and deferred or pending results are not included in the GPA. RMIT does not say how repeated courses are treated, or whether the award level is read from the rounded GPA. Vocational programs weight grades by student contact hours instead of credit points.

GPA Tips for RMIT Students

  • Round your result to one decimal the way RMIT does: its examples report 2.25 as 2.3 and 2.83 as 2.8.
  • A Supplementary Pass (SP) earns 1 grade point, the same as a Pass.
  • Leave pass only (PX) courses out: they are not included in the GPA.

Common GPA Mistakes at RMIT

Using a 7-point table or an 85% High Distinction. RMIT's GPA is out of 4 and HD starts at 80.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the RMIT GPA calculated?
Credit points times grade point value for each course, divided by the total credit points, rounded to one decimal point. RMIT's example of 12 credit points at HD, 12 at DI and 24 at PA gives 108 / 48 = 2.25, reported as 2.3. Its vocational example, weighted by contact hours, gives 340 / 120 = 2.83, reported as 2.8.
What GPA do you need for Distinction at RMIT?
A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or more on the 4-point scale gives Pass with Distinction for a bachelor (non-honours), associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or master by coursework. For associate degrees this applies to students who commenced from 1 January 2016.
How are RMIT honours degrees classified?
By the Weighted Average Mark of your honours-level courses, for students who commenced a bachelor honours degree from 1 January 2016: 80 or more H1, 70-79 H2A, 60-69 H2B, 50-59 Pass, and 0-49 conferred without an honours level. RMIT's WAM example gives 7740 / 96 = 80.625, shown as 81.
Does a supplementary pass count in the RMIT GPA?
Yes. A Supplementary Pass (SP) has a grade point value of 1, the same as PA. A Pass only (PX) result is not included in the GPA calculation.
What grading system does RMIT use?
RMIT University uses a 4.0-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which RMIT grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for RMIT: HD (High distinction)=4.00, CHD (Competent HD)=4.00, DI (Distinction)=3.00, CDI (Competent D)=3.00, CR (Credit)=2.00, CC (Competent Credit)=2.00, PA (Pass)=1.00, SP (Supplementary Pass)=1.00, CAG (Graded competent)=1.00, NN (Fail)=0.00, NH (Failed hurdle)=0.00.
Is this RMIT calculator valid for every programme?
Pass only (PX) results, credit transfer (EX, BX, MX, AL), recognition of prior learning, withdrawals (WDR) and deferred or pending results are not included in the GPA.
