About the ITE GPA System
The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) runs full-time Nitec and Higher Nitec courses after secondary school. It works out a GPA from every graded module, and that GPA decides progression to the ITE Technical Diploma and to the polytechnics.
Why GPA Matters at ITE
The ITE Technical Diploma needs a GPA of at least 2.0 from a relevant Higher Nitec course, including CCA bonus points. From the AY2027 polytechnic intake, Higher Nitec students with a raw GPA of 3.5 or more are guaranteed a place in a mapped polytechnic course, and the minimum for ITE upgraders rises from a net GPA of 2.0 to 2.5. Some engineering and IT diplomas also take Higher Nitec graduates with a GPA of 3.5 or more into Year 2.
ITE Grading Note
ITE grades Nitec and Higher Nitec modules on a 4-point scale with whole numbers only: Distinction and A earn 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and F 0. E (subsidiary pass) and NGP (non-graded pass) also earn 1. Your GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total credit units attempted.
ITE Accuracy Scope
Modules graded Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, and exempted modules, are left out. A failed module stays in the calculation after you retake it, so enter both attempts. With under 50% attendance a module can at best be graded NGP.
GPA Tips for ITE Students
- Enter a failed module and its retake as two lines: ITE keeps both attempts in the credit units attempted.
- Leave out Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory and exempted modules, which carry no grade point.
- Weight each module by its credit units: an 8-unit module moves your GPA four times as much as a 2-unit one.
Common GPA Mistakes at ITE
Replacing a failed grade with the retake grade. In ITE's own example, modules of 8, 6, 7 and 8 credit units graded A, B, C and F, plus the 8-unit retake graded C, give (32 + 18 + 14 + 0 + 16) / 37 = 2.162: the F still counts in the 37 units attempted.
ITE Grading System
Institute of Technical Education uses a 4.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official ITE grade table below. Your cumulative GPA at ITE is the weighted average of all completed modules across every semester.
Each module grade earns a specific number of grade points, which are then weighted by credit units to compute your semester GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA). Use the ITE GPA calculator above to project your CGPA based on expected grades.
