Which courses are BCPM?
The AMCAS Course Classification Guide lists these subjects in the four BCPM groups:
Biology
Anatomy, biology, biophysics, biotechnology, botany, cell biology, ecology, entomology, genetics, histology, human anatomy, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, physiology, zoology
Chemistry
Biochemistry, chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, toxicology
Physics
Astronomy, physics
Math
Algebra, applied mathematics, biostatistics, calculus, geometry, mathematics, statistics
Everything else is AO (all other), including psychology, sociology and economics, computer science, engineering (biomedical and chemical too), kinesiology, nursing, nutrition, public health, pharmacology, and environmental science. AMCAS classifies a course by its main content rather than the department that teaches it, and can reclassify a course during verification.

AB, BC, CD and DE come from half-step grading systems. You enter each grade exactly as your transcript shows it, and AMCAS converts it with the conversion data your college supplied, including percentage and 1 to 5 scales.
Counted in your AMCAS GPAs
- Any course with credit hours and a letter or numeric grade, even if your college left it out of its own GPA or your degree.
- Every attempt of a retaken course, including grades removed by forgiveness or academic bankruptcy.
- Failed courses, and withdrawals your college counts as an F.
- College courses taken in high school, on their own high school (HS) line.
- Undergraduate courses after your first bachelor's degree, in the total and in a postbaccalaureate GPA.
Left out of your AMCAS GPAs
- Most pass/fail courses, passes and fails, plus AP, CLEP and other test credit. They are reported as supplemental hours.
- W (withdrawn or dropped), audit, exempt and courses with no record.
- Narrative evaluations.
- Graduate courses, which get a separate graduate GPA.
Quarter hours to semester hours
AMCAS reports semester hours and uses this table for quarter hours. The calculator applies the same rule, two thirds rounded to one decimal, to each course. For any other credit system, AMCAS says to ask your registrar.
