About the SP GPA System
Singapore Polytechnic, established in 1954, is the oldest polytechnic in Singapore and operates from its Dover campus. SP uses a 4.0 GPA scale across all diploma programmes, with a strong reputation in engineering, applied sciences, and built environment courses.
Why GPA Matters at SP
NUS, NTU and SMU consider polytechnic applicants on their diploma results. Universities publish the GPAs of polytechnic students offered each course in their Indicative Grade Profiles: in AY2025/26, 90% of those offered NUS Medicine had at least 3.87, NTU Computer Science 3.78, SMU Accountancy 3.71 and NUS Engineering 3.57, while NUS Nursing started at 3.18. A strong GPA also qualifies you for scholarships, the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE), and overseas exchange programmes. Diploma with Merit requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and a place in the top 10% of your graduating cohort.
SP Grading Note
SP grades diploma modules on a 4.0 scale. A module needs 50% or more for a clear pass, and D- (45 to < 50) is a subsidiary pass worth 0.5. From 2024/2025, up to two elective modules are left out of your final cGPA automatically if that raises it.
SP Accuracy Scope
Modules graded UP, UF or EX carry no grade point and are not counted. If your attendance in a module falls below 75%, that module can only be graded P or F. Follow the latest SP Student Handbook for anything else.
GPA Tips for SP Students
- Leave modules graded UP, UF or EX out when you calculate by hand. They have no grade point, while an F counts as 0.
- Prioritize Year 1 common modules to build a GPA buffer before harder specialization modules in Year 2 and 3.
- Check your final year project credit weight early. At SP it often carries significantly more credits than a typical module.
Common GPA Mistakes at SP
Many SP students underestimate the credit weight of the final year project, which can swing your cumulative GPA substantially. Treating it as just another module rather than a GPA-defining component is a common and costly mistake.
SP Grading System
Singapore Polytechnic uses a 4.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official SP grade table below. As a polytechnic, SP does not award honours classifications. Your cumulative GPA is the primary academic metric used for university admissions and scholarship applications.
