About the TMU GPA System

Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) grades on a 4.33 scale. Senate Policy 170(a) was revised in November 2025 and took effect in Winter 2026; the scale itself did not change. Single-term courses normally weigh 1.00 and multi-term courses 2.00.

Why GPA Matters at TMU

You need a CGPA of at least 1.67 for clear standing and to graduate; 1.00 to 1.66 is probationary. Graduating with a CGPA of 3.50 or higher earns "With Distinction". Faculty Dean's Lists ask for a term GPA of 3.50 (Ted Rogers School of Management, Engineering and Architectural Science), 3.67 (Arts, Science) or 3.75 (Community Services).

TMU Grading Note

TMU grades on a 4.33 scale under Senate Policy 170(a), formerly Policy 46: A+ (90-100%) is 4.33 and A (85-89%) is 4.00. Final course percentages are rounded to a whole number before the letter is given (49.5% becomes 50%), and GPAs are rounded to two decimals. D- is the lowest passing grade.

TMU Accuracy Scope

Transfer credits (CRT), pass grades (PSD) and FLD are left out of the GPA; F-S and FNA count as 0.00. For a repeated course the most recent grade replaces the earlier one, even if it is lower, so enter only your latest attempt. Programs with a standing variation can require more than D- to pass.

GPA Tips for TMU Students

  • Round each final percentage first: 79.5% becomes 80% (A-), while 79.4% stays 79% (B+).
  • A retake always replaces the earlier grade in your GPA, even a lower one, and a course can be taken at most three times.
  • Multi-term courses usually weigh 2.00 against 1.00 for a single-term course.

Common GPA Mistakes at TMU

Treating 4.0 as the TMU maximum. A+ is 4.33, so a 4.00 CGPA is a straight-A average, not the top of the scale.

TMU Grading System

Toronto Metropolitan University uses a 4.33-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.33, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official TMU grade table below. TMU awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with Distinction requiring a CGPA of 3.50 or above.

Each module grade earns a specific number of grade points, which are then weighted by credit units to compute your semester GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA). Use the TMU GPA calculator above to project your CGPA based on expected grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TMU grade scale?
TMU uses a 4.33 scale: A+ 90-100% (4.33), A 85-89% (4.00), A- 80-84% (3.67), B+ 77-79% (3.33), B 73-76% (3.00), B- 70-72% (2.67), C+ 67-69% (2.33), C 63-66% (2.00), C- 60-62% (1.67), D+ 57-59% (1.33), D 53-56% (1.00), D- 50-52% (0.67) and F below 50% (0.00). D- is the lowest pass.
How is TMU GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its weight (normally 1.00, or 2.00 for multi-term courses), add them up and divide by the total weight. TMU rounds GPAs to two decimals: 2.879 becomes 2.88 and 2.874 becomes 2.87.
What GPA do you need to graduate with distinction at TMU?
A graduating CGPA of 3.50 or higher. The distinction is recorded on your transcript and on your award document.
Does a retake replace your grade at TMU?

What grading system does TMU use?
Toronto Metropolitan University uses a 4.33-point grading scale. Each letter grade corresponds to a specific grade point value, and your cumulative GPA (CGPA) is computed as the credit-weighted average of all module grade points.
