Malaysian University Grading System

Malaysian public universities use a 4.0-point CGPA scale (also called "pointer" by students). Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every course you have completed across all semesters. It determines your degree classification at graduation and eligibility for scholarships, graduate programmes, and government service positions.

The standard grading system assigns A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C- = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, and F = 0.00. This is a common pattern, not a rule: several universities use A- = 3.75 and B+ = 3.50, or A- = 3.70 and B+ = 3.30, and at IIUM a D is 1.67.

What is pointer in Malaysian universities?

In Malaysian universities, "pointer" is the common term for CGPA or cumulative grade point average. When students say "my pointer is 3.5," they mean their CGPA is 3.50 out of 4.0.

What CGPA do I need for First Class Honours in Malaysia?

It depends on the university. Among the public universities we checked against their own regulations, First Class (Kelas Pertama) starts at 3.50 at UiTM and IIUM, 3.67 at most others (including UKM, UUM, UMS, UNIMAS, UMPSA and UniSZA), 3.70 at UTHM, UTeM, UPSI and UMK, and 3.75 at UPM. UM and UMT award no First Class at all. An MQA advisory note from July 2026 recommends a minimum of 3.75, and UKM applies 3.75 from its 2026/2027 intake.

How is CGPA calculated in Malaysian universities?

Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all completed courses. Multiply each course grade point by its credit hours, sum them up, then divide by total credit hours. This CGPA calculator handles the computation automatically.

Is the grading scale the same for all Malaysian public universities?

No. Many use A = 4.00, A- = 3.67 and B+ = 3.33, but UPM, UniMAP, UPSI, UMT and USIM use A- = 3.75 and B+ = 3.50 (as does UKM from its 2026/2027 intake), UM, UTeM and UMK use 3.70 and 3.30, UTHM gives each mark from 40 to 79 its own grade point, and at IIUM a D is 1.67 and counts as a fail. Choose your specific university for the most accurate calculation.

What CGPA do I need for Dean's List in Malaysia?

It varies. Most of the universities we checked set it at a semester GPA of 3.50 or above, usually with at least 12 credits; USIM uses 3.60, UKM, UTM and UUM use 3.67, UM and UMK use 3.70, and UPM uses 3.75.
