About the Adelaide Uni GPA System

If you started your program at UniSA or the University of Adelaide and continued it at Adelaide University, your earlier results count in the same GPA with two changes. A pass from either foundation university is worth 4.5 grade points, not 4 (pick "P (foundation uni pass)" above), and old course units are converted: UniSA 4.5, 9, 13.5 and 18 units and University of Adelaide 3, 6, 9 and 12 units become 6, 12, 18 and 24. Foundation-university W and WF results are not included. A UniSA non-graded pass (NGP) is left out unless your GPA is below 4; then it counts at 4 grade points and the University uses whichever result is better. The University says a small number of transitioning students have results that need extra treatment, and that it will contact them.

Why GPA Matters at Adelaide Uni

Adelaide University uses the GPA as its standard grading scheme. Honours classes come from a separate honours WAM of the honours courses named in your program rules: 80-100 First Class (H1), 70-79 Second Class (H2A), 60-69 Second Class (H2B) and 50-59 Third Class (H3); 49 or below gives no honours classification. We did not check distinction or Dean's list rules.

Adelaide Uni Grading Note

Adelaide University, formed from the University of Adelaide and UniSA, uses one 7-point GPA: High Distinction (85-100) is 7, Distinction 6, Credit 5 and Pass (50-64) 4, while a Fail or Failed Hurdle earns 1.5, not 0. Non-graded results (PNG, FNG) and Withdraw Not Fail (W) are left out. For the WAM, a percentage average, use the WAM calculator at /wam-calculator/.

Adelaide Uni Accuracy Scope

Adelaide University truncates GPAs and WAMs to two decimals: 222 ÷ 42 = 5.2857 is published as 5.28. This calculator now displays the same two-decimal truncation for Adelaide GPA results. Withdraw Fail (WF) is not in the grade list here: the Grading Procedure gives it 1.5 grade points, but the transition table on the University's GPA page shows it as not included. Credit from another program or university usually does not count.

GPA Tips for Adelaide Uni Students

  • Convert foundation-university units before you enter them: a 4.5-unit UniSA course or a 3-unit University of Adelaide course counts as 6 units.
  • Most Adelaide University courses are 6 units, and a course's year level does not change its weight.
  • A UniSA non-graded pass (NGP) only counts if your GPA is below 4, and then at 4 grade points.

Common GPA Mistakes at Adelaide Uni

Counting a fail as 0 or rounding the result. At Adelaide University a Fail or Failed Hurdle earns 1.5 grade points, and the published GPA is cut, not rounded, at two decimals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Adelaide University GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its units, add them up and divide by the total units. In the University's example, Ash has seven graded 6-unit courses (one Pass, three Credits and three Distinctions) plus a non-graded course that is left out: 222 ÷ 42 = 5.28. The exact result is 5.2857, but Adelaide University truncates GPAs to two decimals instead of rounding.
How do UniSA and University of Adelaide results count in an Adelaide University GPA?
They go into the same GPA, with two changes: a pass from either foundation university is worth 4.5 grade points instead of 4, and old units are converted (a 4.5-unit UniSA course or a 3-unit University of Adelaide course becomes 6 units). Foundation W and WF results are left out. In the University's examples, Zac (three graded UniSA courses and a non-graded pass, then four Adelaide University courses) has 198 ÷ 42 = 4.71, and Jo (four University of Adelaide courses, then four here) has 261 ÷ 48 = 5.43.
Does a fail count as zero at Adelaide University?
No. A Fail (F) or Failed Hurdle (FH) earns 1.5 grade points. Non-graded results (PNG, FNG) and Withdraw Not Fail (W) are left out. For Withdraw Fail (WF) the Grading Procedure gives 1.5 grade points, but the transition table on the University's GPA page lists it as not included, so check your myAdelaide record. Fail values differ between Australian universities; compare them on our Australian GPA calculator page.
Does Adelaide University have a WAM?
Yes. The WAM is each course mark times its units, divided by the total units, and it is also truncated to two decimals: in the University's example, Kim's seven marks at 6 units give 2934 ÷ 42 = 69.85. Withdrawn results (W and WF) and non-graded courses do not count. Work yours out with our WAM calculator.
What grading system does Adelaide Uni use?
Adelaide University uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which Adelaide Uni grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for Adelaide Uni: HD (High Distinction)=7.00, D (Distinction)=6.00, C (Credit)=5.00, P (foundation uni pass)=4.50, P (Pass)=4.00, F (Fail)=1.50, FH (Failed Hurdle)=1.50.
Is this Adelaide Uni calculator valid for every programme?
