Level 3 credits by approved subject
Example data. One row per distinct subject. Combine credits from repeated entries without double-counting the same standard. Confirm UE approval before checking the box.
The calculation chooses the best combination of up to five subjects, up to 24 credits in each and 80 overall. It does not verify individual standards or University Entrance.

Confirm eligible credits before using the estimate
Enter Level 3 credits in subjects approved for University Entrance, using one row per distinct subject. The approval checkbox is your confirmation, not an automatic verification against NZQA. Use the official approved-subject list and your results record to check both the subject and the standards belonging to it. The calculator does not import standards, detect duplicated standard credits or validate qualifications. Uncheck a subject to exclude it from this estimate.
Auckland’s admissions page describes best Level 3 credits; its official calculator also refers to Level 3 or higher. This tool’s input scope is verified Level 3 NCEA results. Ask Auckland before combining other qualification levels or systems. Level 3 credits completed before Year 13 can be counted; do not count the same credit again merely because it appears in more than one school report.
Three limits apply at the same time
Each Excellence credit contributes 4 rank points, Merit 3 and Achieved 2. The selection uses no more than 80 credits overall, no more than five approved subjects, and no more than 24 credits from any one subject. The maximum is 320, not an uncapped sum of all achievements. Failed or Not Achieved standards earn no achieved credits for this calculation.
The tool compares allowed combinations of subjects and credits to find the highest score. It does not simply choose the five subjects with the largest raw totals, which could keep a large low-grade subject ahead of better credits elsewhere. The selection table shows how many credits and rank points were counted in each entered subject. Equally scoring choices may produce a different subject allocation without changing the total.
Reproduce Auckland’s 236-point example
The example begins with English, History, Physics, Calculus, Statistics and Economics. English has 28 entered credits but is capped at 24; four Achieved credits are left out. Economics contributes no credits in the best five-subject combination. The overall 80-credit cap also excludes some Achieved credits from Calculus and Statistics. The result is 236 rank points over five subjects.
Credits needed for a particular programme do not have to be among the best 80 used for ranking. This score therefore cannot decide whether you have met required subjects, University Entrance, literacy or numeracy, or whether you will receive an offer. Check the current requirements for the exact programme; the page deliberately does not turn changing programme thresholds into an automatic admission promise.
