About the ACU GPA System

ACU calculates the grade point average as the average of unit grades weighted by each unit's credit points (clause 107): GPA = SUM (GPA value x unit credit points) / SUM unit credit points, using the grade point values in Tables 1 and 2 of the Academic Regulations.

Why GPA Matters at ACU

ACU honours courses are not classed by GPA. The overall honours grade is the credit-point-weighted average of your honours unit marks: 85-100 First Class Honours (HI), 75-84 Second Class Honours Division A (HIIA), 65-74 Division B (HIIB) and 50-64 Third Class Honours (HIII). We found no GPA threshold for a degree with distinction or a Dean's list in the Academic Regulations.

ACU Grading Note

ACU's Academic Regulations (effective 1 January 2026) set a 7-point GPA: HD (85-100) is 7, DI (75-84) 6, CR (65-74) 5 and PA (50-64) 4. Every fail earns 0: NN (0-49), NH (Fail Hurdle, recorded with a mark of 49), NU (Fail Ungraded) and NL (Fail absent).

ACU Accuracy Scope

Pass Ungraded (PS), Credit Granted (CG) and Withdrawn Without Academic Penalty (WW) are left out of the GPA. If the Course Adviser requires you to repeat a completed unit (after an interruption of two or more study periods, or to keep a professional registration current), every attempt counts; a repeat you choose to take on a non-award, full fee-paying basis is recorded but does not count. Credit transferred from an incomplete ACU award keeps its results in the GPA. ACU states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.

GPA Tips for ACU Students

  • Enter a Fail Hurdle (NH) as 0: it is recorded with a mark of 49 but earns no grade points.
  • Leave out PS, CG and WW units; they are excluded from the GPA.
  • Weight each unit by its credit points, as clause 107 does.

Common GPA Mistakes at ACU

Counting a Pass Ungraded (PS) as a Pass worth 4. PS is excluded from the GPA, while its ungraded fail (NU) counts as 0, so an ungraded unit can only lower your GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the ACU GPA calculated?
Multiply each unit's grade point value by its credit points, add them up and divide by the total credit points: GPA = SUM (GPA value x unit credit points) / SUM unit credit points. PS, CG and WW units are left out.
What mark is a High Distinction at ACU?
HD (High Distinction) is 85-100 and worth 7; DI (Distinction) is 75-84 and worth 6; CR (Credit) is 65-74 and worth 5; PA (Pass) is 50-64 and worth 4; NN (Fail) is 0-49 and worth 0.
Does a fail count in the ACU GPA?
Yes, as 0 grade points: Fail (NN), Fail Hurdle (NH), Fail Ungraded (NU) and Fail absent (NL) all have a grade point value of 0 and stay in the calculation.
How are ACU honours classes worked out?
From your marks, not your GPA: the overall honours grade is SUM (honours unit marks x unit credit points) / SUM honours unit credit points. 85-100 is First Class, 75-84 Second Class Division A, 65-74 Division B and 50-64 Third Class; 0-49 is a Fail.
What grading system does ACU use?
Australian Catholic University uses a 7.0-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which ACU grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for ACU: HD (High Distinction)=7.00, DI (Distinction)=6.00, CR (Credit)=5.00, PA (Pass)=4.00, NN (Fail)=0.00, NH (Fail Hurdle)=0.00, NU (Fail Ungraded)=0.00, NL (Fail absent)=0.00.
Is this ACU calculator valid for every programme?
Pass Ungraded (PS), Credit Granted (CG) and Withdrawn Without Academic Penalty (WW) are left out of the GPA. If the Course Adviser requires you to repeat a completed unit (after an interruption of two or more study periods, or to keep a professional registration current), every attempt counts; a repeat you choose to take on a non-award, full fee-paying basis is recorded but does not count. Credit transferred from an incomplete ACU award keeps its results in the GPA. ACU states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.
What is the maximum GPA for ACU on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this ACU page is 7.0.
