Why Canadian GPAs Don't Compare Directly

The same letter earns different points. An A is 4.0 at UofT, McGill and the University of Alberta, 4.00 at TMU and SFU (where A+ is 4.33), 8 of 9 at York, 9 of 10 at uOttawa and 11 of 12 at McMaster.

The percentages behind the letters differ too. A B+ starts at 77% at UofT, TMU, McMaster and Queen's, at 76% at UBC and at 75% at McGill, York and uOttawa. SFU and the University of Alberta publish no university-wide percentage ranges at all.

If an application asks for a GPA on a 4.0 scale, use the conversion that application gives you rather than a generic table.

What GPA scale do Canadian universities use?

There is no national scale. Of the 11 universities on this page, UofT, McGill and the University of Alberta use 4.0, Queen's uses 4.3, TMU and SFU use 4.33, York uses 9 points, uOttawa 10 points and McMaster 12 points. UBC and Waterloo report percentages and publish no official GPA.

Is 4.0 the highest GPA in Canada?

Not always. At TMU and SFU an A+ earns 4.33, and at Queen's 4.3, so a 4.0 there is an A average rather than the top of the scale. At UofT and the University of Alberta A+ and A both earn 4.0, and McGill has no A+, so 4.0 is their maximum.

How do I convert my GPA to a 4.0 scale in Canada?

Use the conversion the school or program you apply to gives you. Few Canadian universities publish one: McMaster's registrar lists a 4.0 value for each letter (A is 3.9), UBC Okanagan shows a percentage comparison on a 4.33 scale, and York has approved a 4.0 scheme but not set its start date.

Do retakes replace grades at Canadian universities?

It depends on the university. The latest attempt counts at TMU, York and uOttawa, and at McMaster for repeats since September 2018; the higher mark counts at SFU and Queen's. At UofT and McGill failed attempts stay in the GPA, and in UBC Arts and Waterloo Arts both grades stay in the average.

What GPA do you need for the Dean's List in Canada?

Each university sets its own rule, usually on a term or year average: 3.50 at SFU and Queen's, 3.50 to 3.75 at TMU depending on the faculty, 8.5 of 10 at uOttawa, 9.5 of 12 at McMaster and 80% in UBC Vancouver Arts. UofT's Dean's List Scholar uses the cumulative GPA (3.50), and McGill limits its list to at most the top 10% of each faculty.
