About the UON GPA System

UON keeps fail grades in the GPA: in the GPA Calculation Procedure's example a course failed (FF) and then passed (P) appears twice, once at 0 and once at 4. Courses are typically 10 units and some are 20. An Incomplete (I) or Special Consideration (S) grade leaves the GPA uncalculated until the final mark is in, and NA, WW (Withdrawn Without Penalty) and EX (Credit Awarded) are not included.

Why GPA Matters at UON

UON uses the GPA for admission, honours selection, scholarships and prizes. A bachelor's degree (AQF level 7) or coursework master's degree is awarded "with Distinction" for a GPA of 6.0 on all studies in the program, with at least half of the program completed at UON; honours degrees, diplomas and graduate certificates and diplomas are not eligible. Embedded honours classes use a WAM instead: 77-100 Class I, 72-76 Class II Division 1, 67-71 Class II Division 2 and below 67 ungraded.

UON Grading Note

UON grades coursework on a 7-point GPA scale: High Distinction (85-100) is 7, Distinction (75-84) 6, Credit (65-74) 5, Pass (50-64) 4 and Fail (0-49) 0. The GPA is the sum of unit value times grade, divided by the total unit value, over all units in your program including fails, and UON rounds it to one decimal place.

UON Accuracy Scope

UON rounds the GPA to one decimal (x.49 down, x.50 up), so its own example of 430 / 90 = 4.78 is published as 4.8; this calculator shows two decimals. Ungraded passes (UP) are left out unless your GPA is below 4.0 or more than half your grades are UP, when UP counts as 4. External credit and cross-institutional study are not included. The calculator takes at most 30 units per row, so enter a 40-unit course as two rows of 20 units.

GPA Tips for UON Students

  • UON courses are typically 10 units and some are 20: enter the unit value as the credits.
  • Keep a failed attempt in: a course failed and later passed counts twice in the GPA.
  • Leave ungraded passes (UP) out unless your GPA is below 4.0 or more than half your grades are UP.

Common GPA Mistakes at UON

Reporting two decimals. UON publishes the GPA to one decimal place, so a calculated 4.78 is a GPA of 4.8.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the UON GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade value (HD 7, D 6, C 5, P 4, FF 0) by its unit value, add them up and divide by the total units. UON's example: HD in 10 units, C in 40, FF and then P in the same 10-unit course, and D in 20 give 430 / 90 = 4.78, rounded to 4.8.
What GPA do you need to graduate with Distinction at UON?
A GPA of 6.0 or more on all studies in your program, with at least 50 per cent of the program completed at UON. It applies to AQF level 7 bachelor's degrees and coursework and extended master's degrees, not to honours degrees, diplomas, graduate certificates or graduate diplomas.
How are honours classes worked out at UON?
End-on honours use the overall honours mark: 85% or above Class I, 75% to 84% Class II Division 1, 65% to 74% Class II Division 2 and 50% to 64% Class III. Embedded honours use a WAM on courses above 1000 level, weighted 2, 3 or 4 by course level and rounded to a whole number: 77-100 Class I, 72-76 Class II Division 1, 67-71 Class II Division 2 and below 67 ungraded. In that WAM a fail from 0 to 44 counts as 44.
Does a failed course count in the UON GPA?
Yes. A fail (FF) counts as 0 with its full unit value, and if you repeat the course both attempts stay in the GPA. Units from other institutions and cross-institutional study are left out.
What grading system does UON use?
The University of Newcastle uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which UON grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for UON: HD (High Distinction)=7.00, D (Distinction)=6.00, C (Credit)=5.00, P (Pass)=4.00, FF (Fail)=0.00.
Is this UON calculator valid for every programme?
UON rounds the GPA to one decimal (x.49 down, x.50 up), so its own example of 430 / 90 = 4.78 is published as 4.8; this calculator shows two decimals. Ungraded passes (UP) are left out unless your GPA is below 4.0 or more than half your grades are UP, when UP counts as 4. External credit and cross-institutional study are not included. The calculator takes at most 30 units per row, so enter a 40-unit course as two rows of 20 units.
What is the maximum GPA for UON on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this UON page is 7.
How can I verify UON grading policy before using this result?
