About the McMaster GPA System
McMaster University averages grade points weighted by units; the calendar's example is 153 grade points over 24 units = 6.4. It keeps a Cumulative GPA, a Term GPA and Fall-Winter and Spring-Summer averages.
Why GPA Matters at McMaster
A Cumulative GPA of 3.0 to 3.4 puts you on academic probation, and below 3.0 you may not continue; program minimums are higher, for example 5.0 for an Honours B.A. The Deans' Honour List needs an average of 9.5 and the Provost's Honour List 12.0. Graduating with a Cumulative GPA of 9.5 earns "With Distinction", shown as summa cum laude on the diploma.

McMaster Grading Note
McMaster's 2026-2027 calendar still uses the 12-point scale: A+ is 12 and D- is 1. The Registrar's Grades page adds a 4.0 column (A+ 4, A 3.9, A- 3.7), but calendar rules such as probation, honour lists and distinction are written in 12-point values.
McMaster Accuracy Scope
Pass/fail courses, non-numeric grades and courses taken at other universities are left out, while failed courses count. For courses repeated since September 1, 2018, only the most recent attempt counts in the Cumulative GPA. Extra courses count in the Fall-Winter average but not in the Cumulative GPA.
GPA Tips for McMaster Students
- Weight each course by its units: a 6-unit course counts twice as much as a 3-unit one.
- Retakes since September 2018 replace the earlier attempt in the Cumulative GPA, and a course can be attempted three times.
- If an application asks for a 4.0 GPA, check whether it wants the Registrar's column (where A is 3.9) or its own conversion.
Common GPA Mistakes at McMaster
Reading a McMaster GPA as if it were out of 4.0, or assuming A converts to 4.0. On the Registrar's 4.0 column, A is 3.9 and only A+ is 4.
McMaster Grading System
McMaster University uses a 12-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 12, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official McMaster grade table below. McMaster awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with Distinction (summa cum laude) requiring a CGPA of 9.50 or above.
