Australian GPA Calculator: University GPA and WAM Scales

Australia has no national GPA scale. Most of the universities we checked use a 7-point GPA, a few use 4 points, and some report only a weighted average mark (WAM) out of 100. Choose your university below: every calculator uses that university's own grade table.

How GPA and WAM Work in Australia

A GPA multiplies each unit's grade points by its credit points (units of credit at some universities), adds them up and divides by the total credit points. A WAM does the same with your percentage marks, so it is a number out of 100. Universities differ in the grade points, which results count, extra weights such as year level, and rounding.

The mark bands differ. The top band starts at 85% at UON, JCU, Flinders, UNSW, QUT, USyd, Griffith, ACU, UTS, Macquarie, Adelaide Uni and WSU, and 80% at Monash, ANU, RMIT, Swinburne, UTAS, Deakin, UniMelb, UWA and La Trobe.

Fail grades differ too. A fail earns 0 grade points at UON, ANU, RMIT, Swinburne, ACU, UTS, UTAS, UWA and WSU; 1.5 at JCU, Flinders and Adelaide Uni; and 0.3 at Monash. At UQ, QUT and Griffith the fail grades 3, 2 and 1 count as 3, 2 and 1 grade points.

UNSW, USyd, Macquarie, Deakin, Curtin, UniMelb and La Trobe report a WAM, where a failed unit counts at its mark rather than as a fixed number of grade points.

If an application asks for a GPA on another scale, use the conversion that application gives. To work out a WAM with your university's own rules, use the WAM calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale do Australian universities use?
There is no national scale: each university sets its own grade points and mark bands. Of the 23 universities on this page, UQ, UON, JCU, Flinders, ANU, QUT, Griffith, ACU, UTS, UTAS, Adelaide Uni, UWA and WSU use a 7-point GPA; Monash, RMIT and Swinburne use a 4-point GPA; and UNSW, USyd, Macquarie, Deakin, Curtin, UniMelb and La Trobe report only a weighted average mark (WAM) out of 100.
Is 7 the highest GPA in Australia?
On a 7-point scale, yes: the top grade earns 7 at UQ, UON, JCU, Flinders, ANU, QUT, Griffith, ACU, UTS, UTAS, Adelaide Uni, UWA and WSU. Monash, RMIT and Swinburne use a 4-point scale, where a High Distinction earns 4, so 4.0 is the top of that scale. UNSW, USyd, Macquarie, Deakin, Curtin, UniMelb and La Trobe have no GPA; the top result there is a mark of 100.
What is the difference between a GPA and a WAM?
A GPA averages grade points (for example 7 for a High Distinction on a 7-point scale), while a WAM averages your percentage marks out of 100. Both are weighted by each unit's credit points. Monash, UTS, Adelaide Uni and UWA publish both. Fails also count differently. At UNSW, USyd, Macquarie, Deakin, Curtin, UniMelb and La Trobe a failed unit counts at its mark in the WAM, while in a GPA each fail grade earns a fixed number of grade points.
How do I convert a GPA to a WAM in Australia?
None of the university pages we checked gives a formula that turns a GPA into a WAM or back, because the two are worked out from different results: grade points and marks. Work out each from your own results instead: use your university's calculator on this page for the GPA, and our WAM calculator for the WAM. If an application asks for a converted figure, use the conversion that application gives.
What is a good GPA in Australia?
We found no Australian university that publishes a general "good GPA" cut-off. The clearest official markers are their award thresholds: UQ: Dean's Commendation for Academic Excellence, a semester GPA of 6.6 out of 7; UON: With Distinction, a GPA of 6.0 out of 7; JCU: With Distinction, a GPA of 6.00 out of 7; Flinders: Chancellor's Letter of Commendation, a GPA over the last 36 units of 6.25 out of 7; ANU: with Commendation (graduate diploma and masters), a weighted average mark of 80 out of 100; UNSW: Pass with Distinction (bachelor pass degree), a WAM of 75 out of 100; QUT: with distinction (undergraduate), a GPA of 5.5 out of 7; RMIT: with Distinction, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 out of 4; Macquarie: Award for Academic Excellence (2020 curriculum), a WAM of 85.000 out of 100; Curtin: Award with Distinction, a CWA of 80.00 out of 100; WSU: with distinction, a cumulative GPA of 6.0 out of 7. Honours classes use separate honours GPAs or marks, listed in the table above.
