About the NTU GPA System
NTU grades undergraduate courses on a 5.00 CGPA scale with letter grades from A+ to F. Known for its strength in engineering, computing, and physical sciences, NTU operates on a semester system, and Pass/Fail courses do not factor into CGPA. In several colleges the Final Year Project grade also decides whether you can receive the highest honours.

NTU Grading Note
NTU grades undergraduate courses on a 5.00-point scale and reports a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Credits are called Academic Units (AU).
NTU Accuracy Scope
Pass/Fail courses, courses declared under the Flexible Grading Option (FGO) and grades such as EX or IP are left out of the CGPA. Failed courses count, even after a retake. Earlier cohorts should follow the handbook for their intake.
GPA Tips for NTU Students
- Identify which courses in your programme are graded Pass/Fail early on. They do not affect your CGPA and should not be included in manual calculations.
- Honours (Highest Distinction) also needs at least a B+ for the Final Year Project in most engineering and computing programmes, and at least an A- in most science programmes, so plan your FYP as carefully as your CGPA.
- The Flexible Grading Option (FGO), which replaced the S/U option from AY2024-25, lets you take up to 24 AU of courses out of your CGPA on a four-year programme (21 AU on a three-year programme). Declarations cannot be reversed.
Common GPA Mistakes at NTU
Students frequently forget to leave Pass/Fail and FGO-declared courses out of their CGPA calculation. These courses carry academic units but no grade points. Failed courses, on the other hand, stay in the CGPA even after you retake them.
NTU Grading System
Nanyang Technological University uses a 5.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 5.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official NTU grade table below. NTU awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with Honours (Highest Distinction) requiring a CGPA of 4.50 or above.
