About the UofT GPA System

The University of Toronto uses the 4.0 grade point scale of its University Assessment and Grading Practices Policy (2020). In Arts & Science, full-credit courses weigh 1.0 and half-credit courses 0.5, and three averages are kept: sessional, annual and cumulative.

Why GPA Matters at UofT

In Arts & Science you are in good standing with a CGPA of 1.50 or higher, and an honours degree needs 1.85. Graduating with a CGPA of 3.50 earns "With High Distinction" and 3.20 to 3.49 "With Distinction". Dean's List Scholar goes to students with a CGPA of 3.50 or higher when they complete their 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th credits.

UofT Grading Note

UofT's Governing Council grading policy sets a 4.0 scale where A+ and A both earn 4.0. Arts & Science, UTM, UTSC and Engineering use the same grade points, and 50% (D-) is a pass.

UofT Accuracy Scope

In Arts & Science, CR/NCR courses (up to 2.0 credits), transfer credits, courses marked Extra and pass grades are left out of the GPA. Failed attempts stay in it. Engineering promotes students on weighted percentage averages rather than the GPA, and UTM and UTSC word their weighting differently.

GPA Tips for UofT Students

  • Enter half-credit courses with weight 0.5 and full-credit courses with 1.0.
  • CR/NCR keeps a course out of your GPA, but Arts & Science allows only 2.0 credits of it.
  • A failed course stays in your GPA even after you pass it on a retake.

University of Toronto uses a 4.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official UofT grade table below. UofT awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with High Distinction requiring a CGPA of 3.50 or above.

How is UofT GPA calculated?
In Arts & Science, multiply each course's grade points by its weight (1.0 for a full course, 0.5 for a half course), add them up and divide by the number of courses in which you earned grade points. Averages do not map exactly onto course letters: UofT's Engineering calendar gives the example that a B+ average covers GPAs from 3.20 to 3.40.
What GPA do you need for the Dean's List at UofT?
In Arts & Science, UTM and UTSC, Dean's List Scholar goes to students with a CGPA of 3.50 or higher at the end of the session in which they complete their 5th, 10th, 15th or 20th credit. It is based on your cumulative GPA, not one term.
Do failed courses count in UofT GPA?
Yes. In Arts & Science every attempt stays in your GPA unless it was taken as CR/NCR or marked Extra. A passed course can be repeated once, and the repeat is marked Extra unless the Second Attempt for Credit rule applies.
