About the QUT GPA System

Queensland University of Technology divides the sum of (unit credit points x grade) by the credit points of completed units. The MOPP glossary's example: four 12-credit-point units graded 7, 4, 6 and 3 give 240 / 48 = 5.

Why GPA Matters at QUT

Undergraduate awards with distinction need a GPA of 5.5 (6.0 for graduate diplomas and master's degrees), with at least 50% of the course's credit points completed at QUT. Honours classes use an honours GPA: Honours I 6.20 to 7.00, Honours IIA 5.65 to 6.199, Honours IIB 5.00 to 5.649 and Honours III below 5.00 for students completing after 1 January 2023. A University Medal needs an overall GPA of at least 6.8 for a bachelor degree of at least three years normal duration, with at least two years of full-time study at QUT.

QUT Grading Note

QUT grades on a 7-point numeric scale with published percentage ranges: 7 High Distinction (85%-100%), 6 Distinction (75%-84%), 5 Credit (65%-74%), 4 Pass (50%-64%), 3 Marginal Fail (40%-49%), 2 Fail (25-39%) and 1 Low Fail (fewer than 25%). The grade number is the GPA value, and a Withdrawn Fail (K) is calculated as 1.

QUT Accuracy Scope

GPAs are reported by course and include every QUT unit completed in the course and every attempt that received a numeric grade. Unfinalised results, S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) grades, units taken at another institution and exempt units (E) are left out. QUT states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.

GPA Tips for QUT Students

  • Enter each unit's credit points; QUT's example uses 12-credit-point units.
  • Enter a K (Withdrawn Fail) as 1.
  • Keep every attempt: a failed unit and its repeat both count in the GPA.

Common GPA Mistakes at QUT

Treating a 3 as a pass. At QUT a 3 (40%-49%) is a Marginal Fail: you may be able to apply for supplementary assessment, but it counts 3 in the GPA as a fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my QUT GPA?
Multiply each unit's credit points by its grade (1 to 7), add them up and divide by the credit points of your completed units. QUT's example: (12 x 7) + (12 x 4) + (12 x 6) + (12 x 3) = 240, and 240 / 48 = 5.
What is the QUT grading scale?
7 High Distinction 85%-100%, 6 Distinction 75%-84%, 5 Credit 65%-74%, 4 Pass 50%-64%, 3 Marginal Fail 40%-49%, 2 Fail 25-39% and 1 Low Fail fewer than 25%. S and U are ungraded and are not in the GPA.
What GPA do you need for first class honours at QUT?
An honours GPA of 6.20 or more. For students completing a bachelor honours degree after 1 January 2023 the bands are Honours I 6.20 to 7.00, Honours IIA 5.65 to 6.199, Honours IIB 5.00 to 5.649 and Honours III below 5.00. If you started before 1 January 2023 and the earlier bands (I 6.50-7.00, IIA 5.50 to 6.49, IIB 4.50 to 5.49 and III below 4.50) give a higher class, you get the higher class.
What GPA do you need to graduate with distinction at QUT?
5.5 for an associate or bachelor degree (not an honours degree) and 6.0 for a graduate diploma or master's, with at least 50% of the credit points completed at QUT. A University Medal needs an overall GPA of 6.8 for a three-year bachelor, 6.7 for a four-year bachelor (including a four-year double degree) or end-on honours degree (with first class honours, or a distinction where honours are not awarded), and 6.5 for degrees longer than four years (including longer double degrees), subject to at least two years of full-time study at QUT. See more Australian university GPA calculators.
What grading system does QUT use?
Queensland University of Technology uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
