About the McGill GPA System
McGill University computes the term GPA (TGPA) and cumulative GPA (CGPA) as course credits times grade points, divided by the GPA credits. The CGPA covers your whole McGill record at one level and restarts if you change level.
Why GPA Matters at McGill
In Arts, Science and B.A. & Sc., satisfactory standing needs a CGPA of 2.00, and 1.50 to 1.99 is probationary; graduation needs 2.00. Honours programs need a CGPA of 3.00 and First-Class Honours 3.50, plus department requirements. At graduation the Dean's Honour List goes to the top 10% of the faculty's class and Distinction to the next 15%, so both are ranks, not fixed GPAs.

McGill Grading Note
McGill grades on a 4.0 scale with A (85-100%) as the top grade: there is no A+, C-, D+ or D-. D is a conditional pass that earns credit but not for program requirements or prerequisites, which need C or better.
McGill Accuracy Scope
McGill truncates GPAs to two decimals instead of rounding (3.596 shows as 3.59); this calculator rounds, so its last digit can be 0.01 higher. Every attempt of a repeated course stays in the GPA. S/U, P and W are left out, while J and KF count as 0. Engineering letters follow each professor's scheme, and Law does not use this numeric scale.
GPA Tips for McGill Students
- Truncate, don't round: a 3.596 CGPA is 3.59 on your transcript.
- Use S/U for one elective per term, up to 10% of your McGill credits, to keep a course out of your GPA.
- A failed course keeps counting in your GPA after you pass it on a retake.

Using an Ontario percentage table. At McGill B+ is 75-79% and C is 55-59%, so the same mark can earn a different letter.
McGill Grading System
McGill University uses a 4.0-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 4.0, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official McGill grade table below. McGill awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with First-Class Honours requiring a CGPA of 3.50 or above.
