About the York GPA System

York University's Senate approved a new 4.0 grading scheme (A+ 4.00, A 3.90) in October 2020, but its effective date is still to be decided, so the 9-point scale remains in force. Averages used for progression and graduation are credit-weighted.

Why GPA Matters at York

In Liberal Arts & Professional Studies an Honours degree needs a cumulative GPA of 5.00 and a 90-credit BA 4.00. At graduation, Summa cum laude needs 8.00, Magna cum laude 7.80 and Cum laude 7.50. In Science, the Dean's Honour Roll needs a sessional GPA of 7.50 on at least 24 credits, and a "First class" degree a cumulative 7.50.

York Grading Note

York still grades on a 9-point scale in the 2026-2027 calendar: A+ is 9 and A is 8, with no minus grades. D is the lowest pass, and E (40-49%) is a failing grade that still carries 1 point. The percentages are only guidelines; letter grades are the official system.

York Accuracy Scope

Only York courses count in York averages. The latest attempt of a repeated course is the grade of record and the only one in your averages; earlier attempts show NCR (No Credit Retained). Pass/fail courses are left out, but a No Credit in a course graded credit/no credit counts as an F.

GPA Tips for York Students

  • Use course credits as weights: a 6-credit course counts twice as much as a 3-credit one.
  • A repeat replaces the earlier grade in every average, even if the new grade is lower.
  • York has approved a 4.0 scheme but not set its start date, so check your calendar before converting.

Common GPA Mistakes at York

Reading a York GPA like a 4.0 GPA. A 7.00 at York is a B+ average, and York's own conversion notes say its old and new scales do not convert precisely.

York Grading System

York University uses a 9-point grading scale. The highest achievable GPA is 9, and letter grades are converted to grade points using the official York grade table below. York awards degree classifications based on cumulative GPA thresholds, with Summa cum laude requiring a CGPA of 8.00 or above.

Each module grade earns a specific number of grade points, which are then weighted by credit units to compute your semester GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA). Use the York GPA calculator above to project your CGPA based on expected grades.
