About the UTS GPA System

UTS calculates GPA = [(Sub1 GP x CP) + (Sub2 GP x CP) + ... + (SubN GP x CP)] / (Total CP enrolled), so every value falls between 0.00 and 7.00. Before 2020 it used a 4-point scale (HD 4, D 3.5, C 2.5, P 1.5, Fail 0.5), which it still gives as a guide if you need a 4-point GPA.

Why GPA Matters at UTS

Levels of award, such as with Distinction or with First Class Honours, are set by each faculty from a WAM rather than the GPA. In the Faculty of Engineering and IT, the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) needs a WAM of 75 for First Class Honours, 70 for Second Class Division 1 and 65 for Division 2, and IT bachelor's degrees need 75 for Distinction and 65 for Credit. Its level-of-award WAM gives subjects graded without marks nominal marks of HD 93, D 80, C 70, P 58 and Fail 25.

UTS Grading Note

UTS moved to a 7-point GPA on 14 January 2020: HD (85-100%) is 7, D 6, C 5, P 4 and a Fail 0. Every GPA calculated since Autumn 2008 was recalculated on the new scale. UTS transcripts have also shown a Weighted Average Mark since 14 January 2020; you can work it out on /wam-calculator/.

UTS Accuracy Scope

All enrolled subjects in your course count, including fails and Withdrawn Fail (0.0), except ungraded Pass/Fail subjects, and only finalised subjects count. Automatic Credit from earlier study at UTS is included. UTS states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals. Faculties set levels of award on their own WAM, which can differ from the transcript WAM.

GPA Tips for UTS Students

  • Include Withdrawn Fail subjects at 0.0: UTS counts them in its own example.
  • If a school asks for a 4-point UTS GPA, apply UTS's old scale: HD 4, D 3.5, C 2.5, P 1.5 and Fail 0.5.
  • A Fail (X) can carry a mark of 50% or more, but it is still a fail.

Common GPA Mistakes at UTS

Mixing the two scales. For the same eight 6 credit point subjects, UTS's example gives 192 / 48 = 4.00 on the 7-point scale and 105 / 48 = 2.19 on the old 4-point scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my UTS GPA?
Multiply each subject's grade point (HD 7, D 6, C 5, P 4, Fail 0) by its credit points, add them up and divide by the total credit points enrolled. UTS's example of eight 6 credit point subjects (one HD, one D, three C, one P, one Fail and one Withdrawn Fail) gives 192 / 48 = 4.00.
How do I convert my UTS GPA to a 4-point scale?
Use the scale UTS used to Spring 2019: HD 4, D 3.5, C 2.5, P 1.5 and Fail 0.5, with the same method. The same eight subjects give 105 / 48 = 2.19.
Does UTS use a GPA or a WAM?
Both. The GPA is on a 7-point scale, and since 14 January 2020 UTS transcripts and AHEGS also show a cumulative WAM for each course (WAM = Σ(MU)/ΣU). The WAM includes subjects with marks, Withdrawn/Fail results and subjects credited from earlier UTS study, but not ungraded subjects or credit from other institutions. Try the WAM calculator for the WAM.
Do fails count in the UTS GPA?
Yes. All enrolled subjects count, including Fail and Withdrawn Fail results at 0.0; only ungraded Pass/Fail subjects are excluded.
What grading system does UTS use?
University of Technology Sydney uses a 7.0-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which UTS grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for UTS: HD (High Distinction)=7.00, D (Distinction)=6.00, C (Credit)=5.00, P (Pass)=4.00, Fail (Z)=0.00, Fail (X)=0.00, Withdrawn Fail=0.00.
Is this UTS calculator valid for every programme?
All enrolled subjects in your course count, including fails and Withdrawn Fail (0.0), except ungraded Pass/Fail subjects, and only finalised subjects count. Automatic Credit from earlier study at UTS is included. UTS states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals. Faculties set levels of award on their own WAM, which can differ from the transcript WAM.
What is the maximum GPA for UTS on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this UTS page is 7.0.
How can I verify UTS grading policy before using this result?
Check the Official References section on this page first. Primary sources used: UTS: Grade point average and weighted average mark; UTS: Grading schema for coursework subjects; UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT: Graduation and progression rules.
