Colleges with only four passing grades convert to 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0; colleges with three convert to 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0; a failure is 0.00 in both. LSAC notes that some colleges' three-grade or numeric scales are converted differently, and publishes each college's conversion in its Interpretive Guide to Undergraduate Grading Systems.

Every US or Canadian undergraduate course LSAC can convert, even ones your college leaves out of its own GPA.
PE, practical art, practical music and ROTC courses that carry credit.
Every attempt of a retaken course, when the transcript shows its grade and units.
Forgiven grades that still appear on the transcript.
Any grade that means failure, such as F, No Credit or Unsatisfactory, at 0.00, including a fail in a pass/fail course.
College courses taken in high school, such as dual enrollment, in the 2026-2027 cycle only.

Left out of your LSAC GPA

AP credit, and passes in pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory or credit/no credit courses. LSAC lists them as unconverted credit.
W, WP and Incomplete, if your college treats them as nonpunitive; WF only if your college treats it as nonpunitive for reasons other than a retake or forgiveness.
Everything after your first bachelor's degree was conferred, including graduate work.
Remedial courses clearly marked as remedial, and noncredit courses.
An earlier attempt whose grade and units are not on the transcript, and forgiven grades no longer shown.

Why your LSAC GPA can differ from your transcript

A+ is 4.33. Many colleges cap an A+ at 4.0; LSAC does not.
B+ is always 3.33. LSAC says an LSAC 3.33 always means B+, even at colleges that count a B+ as 3.5.
Retakes and forgiveness do not replace grades. If the first attempt shows on the transcript, it stays in the average.
Pass/fail failures count as 0.00, even where your college ignores them.
All your colleges are combined. The cumulative LSAC GPA covers every undergraduate school you attended, alongside a GPA for each school and each year.

LSAC does not weigh grades from different colleges against each other. Each law school interprets the GPA itself and receives a copy of every transcript with your report.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does LSAC calculate GPA?

LSAC converts every grade on your US and Canadian undergraduate transcripts to its own values (A+ 4.33, A 4.00, A- 3.67 and so on), multiplies each by the course's semester hours, adds the results and divides by the total hours attempted. The calculator above does the same.

Does LSAC count an A+ as 4.33?

Yes. LSAC's conversion table gives an A+ 4.33 even if your college counts it as 4.0. LSAC member schools chose one common set of values for all US and Canadian grading systems.

Does LSAC count retaken classes?

Yes. All grades and credits for repeated courses count when the transcript shows their units and grades, and a line drawn through a grade does not remove it. Grades your college forgave still count if they appear on the transcript.

Do pass/fail classes count in the LSAC GPA?

A pass does not: LSAC reports it separately as unconverted credit. A fail does: LSAC converts it to 0.00 and includes it, even if your college leaves it out of its own GPA.

Does LSAC include dual enrollment or AP credit?

AP credit never counts. Grades for college courses taken while in high school, such as dual enrollment, count in the 2026-2027 cycle, but LSAC leaves them out from the 2027-2028 cycle on, for new applicants and reapplicants alike.

Does LSAC include graduate school grades?

No. Courses taken after your first bachelor's degree was conferred are left out: graduate and professional work, and undergraduate courses taken after that date. You still have to send those transcripts.

How does LSAC convert quarter hours?

LSAC reports all credits as semester hours. Quarter hours are multiplied by .67, trimester hours count as semester hours, and other units use the formula your college supplies.
