How the grade calculator works

Most classes grade by category: homework, quizzes, tests and a final exam, each worth a share of the course. Your grade is the weighted average of the categories you have finished:

Grade = (score 1 × weight 1 + score 2 × weight 2 + …) ÷ (weight 1 + weight 2 + …)

Example: homework 92% (20% of the course), quizzes 85% (15%) and a midterm of 78% (25%). That is (92 × 20 + 85 × 15 + 78 × 25) ÷ 60 = 84.42%, a B on the plus/minus scale. The final exam, worth the other 40%, is still to come.

To reach 85% overall you need (85 × 100 − 84.42 × 60) ÷ 40 = 85.9% on the final. Enter a target grade in the calculator and it does this for you. If the answer is above 100%, the target cannot be reached without extra credit.

Test grade from right and wrong answers

For a single test where every question is worth the same, your score is (questions − wrong answers) ÷ questions. Missing 6 out of 40 gives 34 ÷ 40 = 85%. The small tool under the calculator does this and shows the letter grade.

If questions carry different points, add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible instead, or type the score as points (for example 68/80) in the calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight you have been graded on. For example, 92% homework worth 20% and 78% on a midterm worth 25% gives (92 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ 45 = 84.2%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
That is normal part-way through a course. The calculator averages only what has been graded so far and treats the rest, up to 100%, as work still to come. If your weights add up to more than 100%, check your syllabus, because category weights normally total 100%.
How do I calculate a grade from points?
Type the score as points, for example 45/50, and the calculator turns it into 90%. If your class grade is simply total points earned divided by total points possible, give each row a weight equal to its points possible.
What grade do I need on the rest of the course?
Enter a target grade. The calculator works out (target × 100 − current grade × graded weight) ÷ remaining weight. With 84% on the first 60% of a course, you need (90 × 100 − 84 × 60) ÷ 40 = 99% on the remaining 40% to finish with 90%.
Is 89.5% an A?
Only if your teacher rounds. On the plus/minus scale below, 89.5% is a B+ because an A- starts at 90%. Many teachers round to the nearest whole percent, so check your syllabus.
What is the difference between a grade and a GPA?
A grade is your result in one class. A GPA averages the grade points of all your classes, weighted by credits. Use the high school GPA calculator or the college GPA calculator for that.
