How the final grade calculator works

Your course grade after the final is a weighted average of your grade so far and your final exam score:

Course grade = current grade × (1 − w) + final score × w

Here w is the final exam weight as a decimal (25% = 0.25). Turning the formula around gives the final score you need:

Final score needed = (target − current grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Example: you have 88% and the final is worth 25%. For a 90% course grade you need (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96% on the final. For an 85% you need (85 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 76%.

Reading the results

  • Already secured means you keep that grade even with 0% on the final.
  • Above 100% means the grade is out of reach with the final alone.
  • The letter table uses the scale you pick. Schools set their own cut-offs, so check your syllabus if your A starts at 90% or 94%.
  • If your final replaces your lowest test, or is graded on a curve, the real result can be better than the calculator shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Use: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight as a decimal. With 88% in the class and a final worth 25%, you need (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96% on the final for a 90%.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Then the target cannot be reached with the final alone. It may still be possible through extra credit, a curve, or a policy where the final replaces a low test score, so ask your teacher.
How much is my final exam worth?
Check your syllabus: it lists what share of the course grade the final exam carries. The bigger the weight, the more the final can raise or lower your grade.
Can a final exam lower my grade?
Yes. If you score below your current grade on the final, your course grade drops. With 90% in the class and a final worth 30%, a 70% on the final gives 90 × 0.7 + 70 × 0.3 = 84%. Use the what-if box to test scores.
What is my current grade?
It is your course grade before the final, usually shown in your school portal. If you only have assignment scores, add them to the grade calculator with their weights to get it.
What is the lowest I can score and still pass?
Enter your passing grade as the target, for example 60% on a 10-point scale or 65% on the plus/minus scale used here. The result is the minimum final exam score that keeps you at or above it.
