How WAM is calculated

WAM = sum of (unit mark × credit points) ÷ sum of credit points

Each mark counts in proportion to its credit points. UNSW's worked example: marks of 80, 81 and 82 in three 6-UOC courses and 83 and 84 in two 3-UOC courses give (80×6 + 81×6 + 82×6 + 83×3 + 84×3) ÷ 24 = 81.625.

Universities then differ in four ways: which results count (fails, repeats, withdrawals, credit from elsewhere), extra weights (Monash counts first-year units at 0.5), the mark used for a result with no mark, and rounding (Curtin rounds unit marks, Adelaide University truncates the average, UNSW says its WAM is not rounded up for awards, and RMIT's example shows its honours WAM as a whole number).

RMIT's bands are its honours levels, since RMIT calculates a WAM only for bachelor honours degrees. UWA's Fail band is split into N+ (45-49) and N (0-44). At Curtin a Fail (F) can be recorded with any mark from 0 to 100, and a pass after further assessment (PX) keeps its original mark, so only grades 5 to 10 are tied to a mark range.

WAM vs GPA

A WAM averages your actual marks out of 100. A GPA first turns each unit's grade into grade points (7 for a High Distinction on a 7-point scale, 4 on a 4-point scale) and then averages those points by credit points. So a GPA cannot be worked out from a WAM figure alone: it needs the grade of every unit.

Macquarie's own comparison shows the difference. Harry's eight marks sit near the top of each grade and Fred's near the bottom: their WAMs are 65.25 and 61.375 (Macquarie prints 61.4), but both GPAs are 4.375 on the 7-point scale Macquarie used before 2020.

Where a university publishes a GPA scale, the calculator gives that GPA from the same marks:

A WAM instead of a GPA: Curtin does not use or calculate a GPA. Deakin uses a WAM instead of a GPA. La Trobe uses a WAM instead of a GPA. GPAs used for admission are calculated by VTAC. Macquarie replaced its GPA with the WAM from 2020. UNSW says it does not use a grade point average (GPA) system. Melbourne reports a WAM, which it describes as working "much like the GPA used by many other universities". The University of Sydney says it does not use a GPA.

Curtin says a receiving institution may use its CWA scale (0.00 minimum, 50.00 mid-point, 100.00 maximum) to calculate an equivalent GPA. None of the universities here publishes a WAM-to-GPA table, so the conversion is up to the institution asking for the GPA.

Honours and awards set by WAM

UNSW: Pass with Distinction (Bachelor Pass degree or Juris Doctor): WAM of at least 75. With Excellence (masters by coursework, excluding Masters (Extended) programs): at least 80. The WAM "is not rounded up" for either.
University of Sydney: Honours class by honours mark for appended, integrated and embedded honours (students who commenced on or after 1 January 2021): First Class 80 to 100, Second Class Division 1 75 to below 80, Division 2 70 to below 75, Third Class 50 to below 70, and no honours below 50, except that the resolutions of an integrated honours course averaged over at least 96 credit points may provide for Third Class below 50. Course resolutions may say whether Third Class is awarded, and students who commenced before 1 January 2023 follow the resolutions in force when they first enrolled unless they elect otherwise.
Monash University: Honours degree grade by WAM (honours commenced from 1 January 2021): H1 80 to 100, H2A 70 to below 80, H2B 60 to below 70, Pass 50 to below 60.
ANU: With Commendation (graduate diplomas, masters by coursework, masters extended, MChD) only with a WAM of 80% or higher. A bachelor pass degree is granted as an ungraded Pass.
Macquarie University: Award for Academic Excellence: WAM of 85.000 for 2020 curriculum courses, plus a minimum share of the program's credit points taken at Macquarie. 2026 Merit List (coursework Bachelor students): 60 or more credit points completed at Macquarie in 2025 and a 2025 WAM of 85 or above.
Curtin University: Award with Distinction: CWA equal to or greater than 80.00 in a single degree (or an award weighted average of 80.00 in a double degree).
Adelaide University: Honours class from the honours WAM: 80-100 First Class (H1), 70-79 Second Class (H2A), 60-69 Second Class (H2B), 50-59 Third Class (H3), 49 or below no honours classification.
RMIT: Honours level from the honours WAM (commenced from 1 January 2016): 80 or more H1, 70-79 H2A, 60-69 H2B, 50-59 pass, 0-49 conferred without an honours level. Other bachelor degrees: a GPA of 3.0 or more is "with Distinction".

We found no university-wide WAM threshold for honours or distinction on the Deakin, La Trobe, Melbourne and UTS pages checked; UTS faculties set their own levels of award. UWA says the distinction calculation is in each course's rules in its Handbook.

What is a WAM?

A weighted average mark (WAM) is the average of your unit marks out of 100, with each mark weighted by the unit's credit points, so a 12-point unit counts twice as much as a 6-point one. UNSW, the University of Sydney, Melbourne, Monash, Deakin, Macquarie, La Trobe, UTS, UWA, ANU (where a WAM is required) and Adelaide University calculate one, and RMIT calculates one for bachelor honours degrees only; Curtin's version is called the course weighted average (CWA).

How do I calculate my WAM?

Multiply each unit mark by its credit points, add the results, and divide by the total credit points. UNSW's own example: marks of 80, 81 and 82 in 6-UOC courses and 83 and 84 in 3-UOC courses give (80×6 + 81×6 + 82×6 + 83×3 + 84×3) ÷ 24 = 81.625. Some universities add their own rules, such as Monash's half weight for first-year units.

How do I convert my WAM to a GPA?

None of the universities covered here publishes a formula that turns a WAM into a GPA, because a GPA is worked out unit by unit from each grade. Macquarie shows why: its student Harry has a WAM of 65.25 and Fred 61.375, yet both have a GPA of 4.375 on Macquarie's former 7-point scale. If your university publishes a GPA scale (ANU, Monash, UTS, Adelaide University, RMIT, UWA), the calculator gives that GPA from your marks. Otherwise UNSW and Sydney advise asking the institution that wants the GPA how it converts results.

Does UNSW or the University of Sydney have a GPA?

No. UNSW says it does not use a grade point average (GPA) system, and the University of Sydney says it does not use a GPA either. Both measure performance with a WAM. Deakin, La Trobe, Curtin (CWA) and Macquarie (since 2020) also use a WAM instead of a GPA.

Why do first-year units count less at Monash?

Monash weights every unit designated first year at 0.5, "regardless of the sequence or year in which you take the unit", and all other units at 1.0. In Monash's own example the WAM is 74.476; the same marks with every unit at full weight would give 73.538. Tick "1st year" on those rows when you pick Monash.

Do failed units count in my WAM?

Yes, at every university here that says so. Melbourne says the mark for a failed subject contributes, Sydney says to include the mark of each failed attempt as well as the later pass, Monash includes failed and repeated units, and UWA counts all unit attempts. RMIT's WAM page does not say it directly; it only converts transfer-credited fail grades to 0. A withdrawal that counts as a fail usually counts as 0: WN at Monash (pick WN on the row) and Deakin, KN at La Trobe, FN at UWA. Adelaide University leaves a withdraw fail (WF) out of the WAM but counts it in the GPA.

What WAM do I need for honours or a distinction?

It depends on the university: UNSW gives a Pass with Distinction from a WAM of 75, Curtin an Award with Distinction from a CWA of 80.00, and Macquarie its Award for Academic Excellence from a WAM of 85.000. Monash, RMIT and Adelaide University award First Class Honours from an honours WAM of 80. The full list is on this page.

What is Curtin's CWA?

The course weighted average (CWA) is Curtin's WAM: the sum of unit credits × mark, divided by the sum of unit credits. Curtin rounds each unit mark at x.5 first, so 79.50 counts as 80. Its example, 57, 60, 63 and 67 in units of 12.5, 25, 25 and 25 credits, gives a CWA of 62.43. Curtin does not use or calculate a GPA.

How is the UQ GPA calculated?

UQ has a GPA, not a WAM. Your grade (1 to 7) is multiplied by the course's unit value and the total is divided by the units. UQ's example: grades 4, 5, 5 and 7 in courses of 2, 2, 1 and 1 units give 30 ÷ 6 = 5.0. A non-graded fail (N) counts as 2, and G, M, K and X count as 0. Because UQ grades are not percentages, this WAM calculator does not cover UQ.
