High School GPA Calculator

Unweighted GPA treats every class the same. Each letter grade becomes points on a 4.0 scale, and the GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points.

Weighted GPA adds bonus points for more demanding classes. With the defaults here, an A in AP Chemistry counts 5.0, an A in honors English 4.5 and an A in a regular class 4.0. Failing grades get no bonus.

Example: A- in honors English, B+ in AP US History, A in Precalculus, B in AP Chemistry, A in Spanish III (all 1 credit) and A in PE (0.5 credit). Unweighted GPA = (3.7 + 3.3 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 × 0.5) ÷ 5.5 = 3.64. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 + 1.0 + 1.0 bonus points: (3.7 + 0.5 + 3.3 + 1.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 1.0 + 4.0 + 2.0) ÷ 5.5 = 4.09. Colleges often ignore your school's weighting and work out their own GPA. The University of California publishes exactly how it does this:

• Only A-G (college-prep) courses count, from the summer after 9th grade to the summer after 11th grade. 9th-grade grades are left out.
• A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Pluses and minuses are ignored, so B+, B and B- all count 3.
• UC-approved honors courses (such as AP and IB HL) add 1 extra point per semester, up to 8 semesters in total and no more than 4 from 10th grade. A D or F in an honors course earns no extra point.
• For nonresidents, only AP and IB courses graded A, B or C get the extra point.
• The GPA is cut to two decimals, not rounded: 3.875 counts as 3.87.
